The following houseparties took place last weekend: Tri Delta Sarah Bull and Claire Williams went to Pawley's with Gerry Kilby and Tom Williamson, Sigma Chi. Lib Usher and Monk LaFitte were also Pawley-bound. Lewis Beard, PiKA, spent last weekend at Myrtle. KA's and dates who went to Myrtle Beach included: ,John Ma son and Ruth Stone, Tri Delt; Bobby Osborne and Lib Caldwell; Byron Miller and Susan McElveen, Tri Delt; Billy Fairey and Mar garet McCain; Rut Osborne and Lillian Williams, Tri Delt. Kappa Sigs Clarence Brown, F. D. Acree, Pat Cox and Palmer Mc Arthur found "The water fine" at Pawley's. Out for folly at Folly Beach werc Edith Coleman with Pi Kappa Phi alum Harry O'Bannon; J. J. Chiles. KD, with Joe Ruthven, Pi Kappa Phi; and Mary Vin Tucker, KD, with Gettis Wood, Pi Kappa Phi. Houseparties being planned for the near future are: Lambda Chi's at Pawley's, the first week in June; Phi Sigma Kappa's at Paw ley's from June 2-8; KA's one at Crescent from May 30 tolJune 6 and another at Myrtle, from June 8-7. OFFICERS Heading the Sigma Nu's for next year will be: Bob Tindall, commander; Howard House, lieu tenant commander; Walter Keen an, secretary; George Shelor, treasurer; Bobby Gaines, German Council representative; John Mar shall, marshall; Gene Fuller, chap lain; A. J. smith, sentinel; and Bill Welsh, reporter. New Sigma Nu pledge officers are: Jack Crosby, president; Wy lie Blackmon, secretary; and Louis Haigler. treasurer. Pi Phi's have chosen the follow ing officers: Jackie Johnson, presi dent; Evelyn Plyler, vice-presi dent; Kathy Bryant, correspond ing secretary; Marilyn McCor mick, recording secretary; Jean Hill, treasurer, and Helen Harbin, pledge supervisor. Newly-elected officers of Phi Sigma Kaps are: Henry Gaddis, president; Benny Outen, vice president; Rupert Blocker, secre tary; Earl Zeigler, treasurer; and Fletcher Monts, sentinel. Bill Bos well was recently named athletic representative for the fraternity. PiKA's have named as officers: Troy Newman, president; George Evans, vice-president; Gene Jor dan, secretary, and Dan Winsett, treasurer. PLEDGES AND INITIATES PiKA's initiated Jim Still, Don Moore, Weston Noyes, Billy Lee and George Patrick on April 30. Marguerite and Ida Webb and Bertha Jo Stokes became Delta Zeta actives on May 13. Kappa Sig's recently pledged Doug Henson, Jack Murphy, Louis Reames, Willie Weatherford, Ed Nye, Heyward Shealy and Clay Jones. Charlie Emmons and Jerry Myers are recent Phi Sigma Kap neophytes. Three new pledges of Phi Kappa Sigma are Sammy Dennis, Henry Stucky and Vernin Epps. PARTIES Undergraduates of Delta Zeta gave their senior sisters a swim ming party at Gibson's Pond Sat urday. Kappa Delt's entertained gradu ating members at an informal party May 17. KA's are making big plans for their annual June Ball drop-in to be held at the Legion Hut. Phi Kappa Sig's and dates en joyed a colonial-dress party at the Broad River Country Club Satur day night. "T" Banner, Delta Tan, was the guest of Rona Seigle, AEPhI, at her home In Bennettaville last weekend. Jimmy Sellers, Kappa Sig alum, will wed Betty Ann Putnam from Greenville on June 4. Other officers are Jackie Ham mond, vice-president, and Lynn Hook, secretary-treasurer. All three are from Columbia. A contest is currently being held in which names for the club are to be submitted to Dr. R. E. Jaggers in 110 Wardlaw College. The most appropriate name will be chosen for the permanent name of the club. Meetings of the club will be suspended until the fall term and the new officers will assume du ties then. LamIbda'Chi[Picks Sponsor F~orBall Miss Jean Lumpkin of Colum bia has been chosen by Lambda Chi Alpha to represent the frater nity in a contest to choose the queen of the grand ball for the 21st General Assembly at Ashe ville, N. C., June 21-23. The queen will be selected by a non-member committee from In dianapolis, Ind.. national head quarters, from photographs sent by chapters from colleges through out the United States and Canada, each chapter being allowed to make one nomination. The winner will be the guest of Lambda Chi Alpha at the Grove Park Inn from June 21 to noon of June 24. Miss Lumpkin, a junior, is a member of Delta Delta Delta so rority. She was selected "Miss Garnet and Black" for the beauty section of the 1947 year book by Walter Thornton of New York City and -was runner-up for tho same title this year. A king of the grand ball, to be held the night of June 23, will be chosen fronm among the delegated after arrival at Asheville. J.eaane sza"i, ' Six Chemistry Assistantships Are Available The university graduate school has announced the availability of six graduate assistantships in chemistry for the 1948-49 academic year. Under provisions of the agree ment, the assistants will be ex pected to devote 12 hours each week as laboratory assistants in the departmnent of cheistry. They may, at the same time, carry ap proximately eight semester hours of graduate work each semester. This would mean completion of approximately two-thirds of the requirements for a masters degree while earning the stipend of $100 per month for the nine months of the academic year. Interested and qualified students should contact Dean W. H. Callcott. Those intending to apply are ad vised to do so immediately in or der that final arrangements may be completed as soon as possible. AAUW Entertains Graduating Coeds Thirty graduating co-eds wvere given an informal garden party on the campus in front of Leiber College Tuesday afternoon by the Columbia branch of the American Association of University Women. Miss Nelle Douglass of the mat.h matics department was in charge. Pamphlets were distributed to the girls for an understanding of the club's work and how they might join the organization.
