The Carolina Naval R.O.T.C.
rifle team placed 15th out of 71
competing schools in the recently
completed Hearst Trophy Matches.
The match was fired during the
month of January at the univer
sity and the scores forwarded. by
mail for final tabulating.
The matches, set up ley William
Randolph Hearst to further arms
competition among NROTC units,
was won by the Ohio State team
with a score of 893 out of a pos
sible 1,000. The Carolina score
was 852.
Without leaving the campus the
team has competed in 13 matches
since November 21. Of these,
they have wvon six and lost six.
The other match has to be re
peated due to a misunderstanding
as to the number of shots to be
fired.
'rhe trick to this kind of com
petition is to use the United.
States mails. Since funds are at
a low ebb, "shoulder to shoulder"
natches are impossible, so Marine
M4ajor L4. D. Reid, team Coach, al
ows his team to fire and ex
~hanges results with the compe
ition. A mere comparison of the
cores decides the winner.
The University team started
>y losing six of their first seven
natches, but rallied to wvin the
ast five. Major Reid expects to
lo even better during the re
naining matches to be fired.
Members of the team are H. C.
