Well-Balar Shapes-Up Boxing workouts at Carolina reached a faster tempo the past week, as Coach Jess Alderman prepared for his opening match less than a month away. Alderman has men in most weights that will be able to do well in collegiate competition, and hopes to add several newcomers at the beginning of next semes ter. More roadwork and sparring sessions are on the schedule for the next, several weeks. Here are the leading prospects in each weight: 118-pound: Chris Hitopoulos of Charleston, a veteran of last year's Carolina team. 125-pound: Pete Compassi of Clarksdale, Miss., high school featherweight champion of Mis isssippi, and champion of Keesler Field while in the service. 130-pound: Elerson Fowler of Memphis, Tenn., high school :hampion of Memphis for three years while attending Southside. Hie was voted the best fighter in the tournament one year. Watson Dawes of last year's team is also improving fast. 135-pound: Grady Decell of Jackson, Miss., fought for Iowa Pre-flight. Fletcher Dean of Orangeburg, a letterman at Caro lina, is coming around nicely, as is Basil Stevenson of Anderson. 145-pound: Ray Avant of Georgetown, Southern Conference ehampion. 155-pound: Jim Briggman, and Rhyan Shealy head the field, in this department. 165-pound: Sylvester Lewis, of Niemphis, Tenn., attended South side High, where he was prep mchool champ in his weight. He's i man to watch. George Patrick and Frank Threatt also look good in that weight. Unlimited: Bob Dockery and Bill Rutledge, both members of the football squad, appear to be ~he best bets.
