ra au~ SPOR I By DO] COULD BE BETTER Our baseball team this year hi been the subject of much tal good and bad, humorous and ser ous. Your columnist has been al proached by many students on ti campus, some who went out f< baseball and some who didn't, c just what it is that Carolina lacl toward having a good baseba team when she has so many pro pects at her disposal. Davis Fiel was simply crawling with bol who wanted to play ball whe the call was put out for cand dates. The majority of these ha to be dropped to get the squa to the right number to carry c the season's campaign. Many boy were "dropped," or discourage from staying on, who wei thought by people who have see them perform here and elsewher capable of holding down a sp( on this or any other college bas( ball team in this section. We hav been told that some of these boy have been approached later on th prospect of their coming back ou Naturally, they promptly turne down the "opportunity." Well, the team was picked an the season started. We have ri complaint about the efforts c everyone of those who have pla; ed on the team this year, but the have been a losing ball tear something that is bound to 1 criticized by many persons. Whi we mutter silently, "Thank tl Lord for The Citadel" (23-4 i favor of us!), others are frowi ing upon losses to Erskine, Nev berry, Presbyterian, and Clemso Carolina students may be ask( to support a loser at times, bi no one wants to make a care< of it, so the question comes u "Why can't we get nine perso out of 4000 who can whip schoo that have to pick nine persons 01 of a few hundred?" Maybe v can, but a system for selecting tl best must be carried out conse entiously by those who pick ti team. Fielding a good baseba team to represent the Universil of South Carolina must come b, fore personalities or anythir else within the bounds of got ethics in sports. We are in full sympathy wil the Carolina coaching staff i that they are restricted by of lack of facilities and limited fund We do beUeve, however, that thei are athletes on this campus I supply the teams that are n< furnished with paid players. The may not be national or conferen< champions, but they would ho: their own with schools that pic their players in the same manni as we. Your columnist could ce tainly not pick the team, nor is his .job, but those who do pic the team are responsible to ti students of the University< South Carolina with doing the best, with what they have, towai fielding teams that are represent PITI Driver .......... Well, Don, that sums Cr n things up pretty well . . . there's Ai e something drastically wrong. And Sn >t someone is to blame. Jo "Don, I'm a former sports scribe Je e for The Gamecock, and I know s something about athletes. A good e athlete doesn't like to play second t. fiddle. Yes, people say 'that's not d being a good sport,' but athletes are only human. C d "I know of ball players-and o fine ball players--who went out f for this year's varsity, only to be . r- turned away.
