SPOR TORAMA By DON BARTON AT CHARLESTON-TONIGHT Our baseball team swings into action tonight, facing The Citadel in Charleston. We're looking for the Birds to get back into the "win" column. It's time for the breaks to start falling our way, so we're betting that Coach Smith's outfit gets its share of victories from here on out, although we may expect to lose some. We still have a chance to even the score with our friends from Clemson, Erskine, and P. C. Let it be known that this is exactly what we intend to do! Our pitchers have had a rough time of it, suffering from sore arms and a little wildness. Szakasci and Berlin have come out promising hurlers, and with Alexander, Driver, Sherer, Byrd, Proctor, and others in form we should present quite a problem for opposing batters. Way and Scott are improving behind the plate, and catchers are important items in getting the best results from pitchers. We have about seventeen more games to play and a good chance to end up "out of the red." OUTSTANDING ATHLETE We hope that every student will vote conscientiously in the poll to select the University's outstanding athlete. We have a number of deserving men to select from, so it isn't an easy decision to make. This is no political affair; merit is the only thing that counts. Soliciting of votes by anyone, for anyone is strictly out of order. Above all, take the few minutes required to go over and vote. That's a small amodnt of time compared to six after noons a week on a practice field. BRIEFLY SPEAKING We're putting our (theoretical) money on Scooter Rucks in his meeting with Chambers of N. C. State this afternoon in the 440-yard dash. It wouldn't surprise us at all to hear that Scooter breezed over the finish line in less than 50 sec onds ... We wonder if anything is being done in the way of getting better-looking uniforms for the band to wear this coming football season. The dull appearance of the present band uniforms is entirely out of keeping with the supposedly high spirits at our grid games. When the University of South Carolina band is on the field we want to make people know it-and like it! . . . A. J. Smith of the Gamecock net team has been laid with a mild illness for the past several days. He should be ready to go against Davidson Monday, however ... Page four has done it, again! The tennis player pictured on the lower par of Tuesday's Gamecock sports page was not Gordon McLaurin; it was Harris Todd. The intended picture (of McLaurin) is shown on this page. Pardon-moi, monsieurs . . . Now, it seems that certain factions throughout the state are waging an anti-State Fair game campaign. Their object is to get the Carolina-Clemson played on a home-and-home basis. Upstate newspapers have been carrying various ar ticles telling the advantages of playing the game at Clemson. They point out Clemson's larger stadium, plenty of free parking space, and no State Fair or stadium tax, among other things. The outcome of this campaign will no doubt be up to the state's political "wheels", but regardless where we play Clemson or when we play 'em, Enright's men will still find a way to that double-stripe. Touchdowns count six points up there, just the same as they do here. LEARN THE WAY COPELAND CO. 1409 Main Street Columbia, S. C. Baseballers Lose One To Indians; Face The Citadel Tonight By JOE MOLONY The Carolina baseball team lost their eighth game Thursday at Newberry by a 7-2 count. The Gamecocks travel to Charleston today to take on the Citadel in a night game. The highlight of the Newberry contest was at uncovering of .several "finds" for Coach Catfish Smith in Joe Johnson, Melvin Cribb, and Bo Hagan. Johnson got two hits for three times at bat against the Indians and is currently boasting an .800 average. Cribb played a bang-up tame against Newberry, also, and gathered in two hits for four at bats, one of the blows being a home run over the 350 foot left field fence at Newberry. Hagan, the third of this trio, proved that he could put the ball over the plate quite effectively. Bo pitched five innings and al lowed one earned run over this stay. Comments After this game it appears that, if the pitching of Alexander, Ber lin, Szakasci, and Driver comes through, the Birds will be hard to beat in their remaining con tests. As a rule, the team plays heads-up ball, but on occasions they seem to blow-up in the early innings. The pitchers seem to start the games cold, as evidenced by the numerous big-score first innings against Carolina pitchers. The new additions will help Caro lina's hitting attack, which seems to have bogged down in the last several games. Cribb looks like a natural at the plate. Gordon McLaurin is presently playing the number two position for the Carolina tennis team. He is now in law school and will not be eligible after this season. His home is in Dillon.
