SPOR TORAMA By DON BARTON LIKE A SORE THUMB The majority of students at Carolina are fairly broad minded when it comes to the University's athletic teams, but there is a number of so called wiseacres scattered throughout the student body that seem to have little to do except to think up derogatory remarks to make about our teams and our players when they lose a game. The number of these wiseacres seems larger than it really is because they always make themselves obnoxious in criti cizing the Gamecocks when they are behind, while the others are taking defeat gracefully. It is sad, indeed, that a school has to put up with this element. The mouths of these "know it all's" went into action after the Duke and Wake Forest football games and took advant age of every opportunity to get a work out after losses dur ing the basketball season. You might notice that these per sons never don a uniform to prove their qualifications to criticize. GETTING THEIR SPRING WORKOUT These critics really had a hey-day during Michigan State's two day visit to the local diamond. Everything was fine the day before, when we whipped Duke, 9-4. Well, the Birds ran into trouble and the mouths ran into the night. All the shortcomings of the players and the team as a whole were reviewed with certainly not constructive intentions, and the wiseacres were in their glory, again. It seems that such a group is inevitable in all schools, so we would like to make a suggestion to all those who have this uncontrollable desire to censure Carolina players and teams. First, if you're such an expert in detecting the faults of S their performances, why not take your suggestions to the A coach of the team, or go to the individual players and say - the things to their faces that you are so willing to express BEHIND THEIR BACKS. Second, if you are really eager to air your opinions, bring them or mail them to us and we'll do our best to put them before the public, with your name attached. A POSSIBLE EXCEPTION C tl In the case of the baseball team there are probably several fe boys who have a little justification in criticizing. These are the ones who tried out for the team and were eliminated in fo the process of reducing the squad. Possibly, some of those w dropped from the squad are better ball players than some G wearing uniforms, and then some just didn't "have it", but T all of them were trying and, at least, were doing something lo besides talking. The only trouble is that criticisms from this group sound ai much like a case of "sour grapes", so they are probably bet- F ter unspoken. Not everyone realizes the circumstances ex- r, isting, but, then, there are some who do. ii Phi Sigma Kappa Golfers Down a Takes Lead In Bowling League MuIroon Team t1 a, With only four more weeks of After dropping a 10-8 match to L competition left, the Phi Sigma Davidson, Tuesday, on a wind Kappa bowlers held the lead ini the Inter-Fraternity DuckpinsvetCaltecuty lb League for games ending March cus,teCrln ofta 27.caebcstogttructh At the end of the playnff RayColg of haesnMros Shulman, owvner of the Capitol180FrdyonteCumi Bowling Center, where the teams bowl, will present an attractiveconrclbikst trophy to the winning fraternity.
