SPORTORAMA By DON BARTON STILL TRYING Again, we implore whoever is in charge of our tennis courts to, PLEASE, make some effort to have them put in respect able condition. Half-hearted attempts have been made in the past, but a relapse invariably occurs. Sprinkling a layer of red mud on them has little beneficial effect. As yet, the courts have not been wet and rolled enough to prevent soil erosion, much less to make a tennis ball bounce true. Far smaller schools can afford far better and more courts than we have. It really doesn't cost so much money. An hour or two of work each morning would do the trick. ".... OVER SPILT MILK" Many Carolina students were much disturbed over Coach Frank Johnson's strategy of keeping the majority of Game cock first stringers on the bench for a large part of the sec ond half against North Carolina. Their belief was, not that we would have won the game, but, with Adams, Cantore, and Martin in action, the score would not have been quite so one sided. It brought back shades of that disappointed feeling experienced after last fall's gridiron encounter with Duke. A WISE MOVE The Southern Conference basketball tournament has fin ally come into its own. The transfer of this annual champion ship playoff from Raleigh to Durham has been mildly revo lutionary in its effect on the prominence of the tourney. The surge from an attendance of 4,000 to one of 9,000 is the most significant advantage of the change. That's getting into the big time. Our Gamecocks disproved one argument against playing the tournament in the Duke indoor stadium. Persons con tended that Duke would be at a great advantage playing on her home court. Well, all of you know what happened to the Blue Devils in the first game of the tourney. We are happy to see the talent more evenly distributed among conference teams. In the past Duke and North Caro lina have been far ahead of the rest of the field, but this year there were several teams capable of giving both of these a bad evening. This makes the race more interesting by creating a sort of balance of power. SIXTEEN INSTEAD OF EIGHT? Wilton Garrison, sports editor of the Charlotte Observer, thinks the tournament will enlarge to a 16-team affair. This would add on@ more day to the elimination and allow every team in the conference a shot at the championship. Garrison sees the possibility of this change by next year. We would like to see this alteration. It would give teams that get off to a slow start, but improve greatly toward the end of the campaign, a chance to prove themselves, despite a poor won-lost record in the regular season play. There are also cases of a team such as Davidson. The Wild cats had a fine quintet but were unfortunate in playing the best teams in the conference and not enough of the weaker ones. Consequently, she was sitting at home when tourney time arrived. South Carolina, which Davidson defeated twice, I was right on hand for the final showdown. What we're driving at is the temptation for teams to play v a "tournament" schedule. Why play the big ones and get licked, when you can play the weak sisters and go to Dur- ' ham? Letting all the schools in the conference participate would eliminate this temptation and everybody would be happy. ] It's Fun To Get Your Records At The Blue Room Music Shop Your "Listening Post" for Latest Records Popular, Classical and Children's Records( 1206%/ Main St. (Upstairs Across from Wade Hampton Hotel) Columbia, S.
