Rex Points Chick'en In The Rough By CHICK SHIELS The score stood at 39-0. There was joy in one locker roon and gloom in the other, and rightly so. The University oJ South Carolina lost their second game of the 1946 footbal season to a powerful Duke University team last Saturda at the Fair Grounds Stadium. Many reasons can be offere4 for this 39-0 set-back. Some would only class the explana tion as alibis and let it go at that. A closer look migh clarify the matter. A football team is only as strong as tho eleven men who are on the field at one time. If this com bination wins regularly together, that is most pleasing, bu take away some of the cogs in the machine and try to obtah peak performance. It cannot be done. Saturday afternooi saw the same hold true. Carolina paid a heavy price to wh the Maryland game ten days ago. A price so high tha they were unable to match game with the Blue Devils from Durham. Many were on the sick list. Many didn't dres, out In uniform and some 9f those dressed were not able ti see much action. This lack of strength naturally affects 4 ball club's ability to show what they possess in both of fensive and defensive power. Contrary to what some hold true, the University has pretty fair ball club. They can "go" and they can win, bu not without the whole outfit being in tiptop shape. We were sorry to see the team bow in such humble defeal For the whole season, a bald head has watched the Garne and Black move, and Saturday's bout lessened the joy ii Gamecockville greatly. We were also sorry to see the mort support disappear when the going really got rough. i team, as well as the backers, must learn to lose, but the must do it gracefully. Despite the many obstacles that cropped up, our vote goe to the team for the fine way they accepted defeat with tw and a half strikes against them from the start. With ol fense and defense shackled, the Gamecocks made the beE showing possible. It has been rumored around that Felix "Doc" Blanchar< of the Blanchard-Davis combo, has been offered thirty fiv thousand dollars to sign with a professional team. This he no verification what-so-ever, but does sound as if the littl fellah stands some chance of making a wee bit of cash. ] will be interesting to watch and see just how much some the other terrific players in the country will pull down they decide to turn pro. Credit where credit is due, dept.: To those few in tt Boosters Club who worked so hard to see that all was i order for Homecoming, we offer our thanks. It requir( many hours of planning to assure the public of a good shoN ing at the half time. At the game Saturday and among the spectators wei quite a fist full of high school footballers from this end i the country. Mullins, Jacksonville and Rock Hill, to me: tion just a few, witnessed the game from choice seats on tl Carolina side. Perhaps some of these rising players mig] don the Garnet and Black in days to come. There is a I of good material to choose from.
