Rough By CHICK SHIELS The victorious Pi Beta Phi's presented their able coach, Joe Patrone (of COLLEGIATE INN fame), with a beautiful gold wrist watch as a slight token of their esteem. The "Arrowettes," it will be remembered, walked off with all honors in the third annual Powder Bowl game with a sterling 20-0 defeat of the scrappy Tri Delt's. Needless to say, Jose was quite pleased with the girls' thought and he'll be glad to tell the time for all comers now. December 5th is gradually rolling closer. That night the offerings of Freddie Slack & Co. will be enjoyed by the Block "C" Club and friends in the Fieldhouse from the hours of nine till one. Neil Allen, president of the organization, said the other day that Ella Mae Morse would be supplanted by an even smoother chirper in the "Shape" of Dottie Anne Dare. The Club had a meeting last Wednesday night to settle a few remaining details on the dance and Pete Lane produced the pictures of Miss Dare as sent him by a booking agency in New York. She is most attractive, which just about takes the cake for "UNDERSTATEMENT of the year." There need be no worry about the lack of good music or etc. when the Slack combo takes the stand. (That last "etc." is most important.) This afternoon's ball game with Duke will still find a few of the Gamecocks ailing. That Maryland bout, last week in College Park, was rather costly to Rex Enright who had a number of injuries crop up during the course of the 21-17 win. Doyle Norman, stellar guard, suffered a leg injury which he is still favoring. "Bo" Hagan, picked as "Fresh man of the Week," has another leg ailment which must be taken into consideration. Max Walker, who didn't make the trip to Maryland due to a bad ankle, will more than likely turn in a full game on the Bird forward wall. It is certain that Bryant Adams Meeks, Jr., of centering fame, will make more long strides toward his bid for All-America center. The Macon Menace still bears a broken nose as a souvenir of the Old Liners. Jake Land, Ed Dew and Steve Nowak are also on the sick list. Regardless of the injuries, the Blue Devils will still have plenty to contend with. The Gamecocks have not yet deeded any match without putting up a fierce battle. Our vote goes to Rex's Reckers who will beat the Dur ham Devils. Right OFF The Nest ... the Garnet and Black made a fine show at Maryland the other day ... had their warm-up jackets tarned and the white side was out, with some of the hoods up ... reminded us of a professional crew ... saw a few of the old Carolina crew in Washington . . . Bud Eades, an ex-footballer from the 1945 season, Bob Hirsch, last year's "rugged" Cheer leader, Joe Piedmont of managerial fame and Gerry Dunbar. Also Johnny Farrell who also logged in many hours on the roost . . . the Maryland game was Televised through the courtesy of RCA . . . will be sent all over the world . . . the Duke Blue Devils will be minus their flashy all-blue uniforms here today . . . the various shortages caused them to abandon the classy blue trousers which matched the jerseys perfectly . . . speaking of uniforms and the like, the Game cocks have looked terrific on every occasion this year... all men eager for Basketball fame had better get hot, pronto . .. Thursday's STATE mentioned that Ben McQuinn had "CHARGE" of the bon fire last night at the pep-rally, prior to the bout today... we wonder if he regulated the combustion, etc., too... Johnson, who has been tied up with his football coaching du ties, stated that practice has been in full swing for a few days now and anyone interest ed in making their bid for Var sity honors should begin right away. It was also mentioned that all prospective Basketball candidates wilt have to furnish their own shoes due to the cri tical shortages along those lines. Coach Johnson, busy recently with line coaching, said that any man interested in the team and trying out for sainle should either see him, or be ready to work any afternoon at three in the University Fieldhouse. This year's edition of Garnet and Black courtmen will have a fine array of material on hand in many returning veterans, but there are still vacancies to fill. They are: Earl Dunham, the team's brilliant field general, Bobo Carter, Pat Thrash, and Steve Nowak, ends; Bruce Tate, eente-; Neil Allen and Julian Long, guards; and Jim Hunnicutt, halfback. All of these men have figured prominently in U. S. C. victories this fall. Last year Carolina and Duke met in Durham at the first, of the season, and the Birds received a humiliating 60-0 setback. That score has stood out in the minds of Carolina partisans ever since, and they are resolved to see it avenged. On the strength of their great play against Tennessee, Army, and Wake Forest, the Blue Devils have been established as favorites td dislodge the Birds from their roosting place atop the Southern Conference stand ings. Only the Black Knights of West Point have been able to score more than two touchdowns against Wallace Wade's stubborn aggregation, while Carolina has limited six op ponents to a total of 59 points and is listed high among the nation's best in total defense. This game holds the Southern Conference spotlight this week end and Is drawing much attention from the rest of the country. By taking this afternoon's contest U. S.
