SWEET YOUN 7 P.M.WillSee Renewal Of Battle Both Mentors To Employ "T" By DON BARTON The game of football will receive a rare treat tonight at 7:00, when the gals of Pi Beta Phi and Delta Delta Delta Sororities take the field against each other in the annual Powder Bowl classic. A large crowd is expected at Melton Field to see the third game of the series, and the first to be played under lights. The contest has been scheduled to go four eight minute quarters, regular football rules prevailing, with the exception that the two-hand touch will replace tackling. Uniforms will consist of blue dungarees and jersies, with only such paddings as nature affords. The Pi Phi's will wear red jersies with black numerals, while the Tri-Delts will be adorned in white jersies with red numbers. Fans may be assured of a rough 'n tumble affair, as these two rivals collide in quest of grid iron glory. Sorority spirit is at a fever pitch, and each team seems confident that, when the powder settles, its opponent will be limping home in defeat. In seeking their first win, the Tri-Delts have placed their hopes on an array of fast "scat" backs, who promise a great deal of trouble in an open field. They operate from the Notre Dame "T" formation, shifting into a box, the same system that Alabama used against Carolina this year. Much time has been spent lately on per fecting plays, and Coach Hareld Middlebrooks' charges appear in good shape as game time approaches. June Henry, the Deltas' ripping full back, and Delores Shuler, quarterback, will bear much of the offensive duties, as they perform behind a forward wall of savage blockers. The Tri-Delt. will be crtnined by Nibbse Forbes and are nicknamed the "Notre Delta Dames." The Pi Phi's, under the mentorship of Joe Patrone, will hold a slight weight advantage in the line and in the backfield. The "Power houses" will offer a dazzling variety of reverses and fakes in their bid for another victory. In "Slingin" Frances Smith, triple-threat halfback, and Jo Seideman, able fullback, the Pi Phi's have two girls that must be checked, if the Tri-Delts are to turn the trick. Smith's passing arm will find two good targets in Helen Harbin, rangy right end, and Virginia Williams on the left flank, which gives the damsels in Red and Black one of the best passing attacks in feminine football. The "Powerhouses" also shift into a box, from the "T." Seideman is the Pi Phi captain and Smith, the co-captain. In the past, there has never been more than one touchdown scored in a single game, which gives good reason to believe that another close one is on tap for tonight. Green Street football experts rule the contest a toss-up and will give odds on neither team. Conse quently, betting has been confined mostly to the most fervent backers of the two sororities. Practice injuries have been kept at a minimum in each squad, so when kickoff time rolls around tonight, both outfits should be ready to defend their pigskin prestige with the utmost vigor. It should prove well worth watching.
