University of South Carolina Libraries
Every now and then we have weekends here at Carolina like the one just past, as you know if you've been here very long.. . practically the entire student body headed for Green-' ville Friday to take in the Furman game . . . and most of them couldn't quite make it back to the campus before Sun day night . . . and with fraternity rush parties over for the semester, it wasn't what you'd call a lively weekend at all . . . Don't worry, though . . . we promise you it won't last . ..everybody has started looking forward to fair week and the Clemson game, but there'll be lots going on before then . . . Meanwhile, here's the latest dope on current social Vvents .,. . Here and There The ATOs have accused us of neglecting them, so we'll tell .you a little about their doings during rush week ... they entertained rushees with a couple of lively affairs, one at the Elks' Patio, and the other at Charlie Romau's . . . Then the ATO alums did their p1trt by throwing a wonderful party at Forest Lake for the brothers and their rushees and dates . . . Thursday night they closed their rush season with a smoker in the fraternity house . . . stag, of course . . . Wed nesday night the Phi Kappa Sigs killed two birds with one. stone, figuratively speaking, combining a Founders' day banquet with rush talking, and topping it all off with danc ing to the music of Eddie Helms' orchestra ... The Phi Sigs did things in a big way recently when they held a cabaret party at the Jefferson Hotel . . . nearly a hundred people were there, ineluding Phi Sigs from the University of Ala bama and from the University of Pennsylvania . . . (That's what happens when the war's over and people can travel again) ... The Chi Os mixed a little work with pleasure the other day when they all pitched in for a general house cleaning of the sorority room . Lagniappe We promised an explanation of that word one of these days, deciding we'd wait until somebody was interested enough in finding out to ask . . . Now, after days and days somebody has, although inot very enthusiastically . . . On second thought, just ask somebody who's been in New Or ' leans . . . they'll tell you . . . maybe ... By the way, Griffin Campbell, president of the University Players, keeps telling us he wants everybody to know what a wonderful organiza tion they have this semester . . . So we'll let you in on the secret . . . Their first play for the semester sounds like a good one, incidentally . . . better plan to see it . .. The fresh men are going in for politics in a big way these days posters and everything . . . next we'll be having pictures Between-classes coffee seems to be a popular pastime these days . . . the law school usually descends en masse on the College Shop some time during the morning . . . the other day we counted about twenty in there, including Bob Cannon, Brinson Moorhead, Holmes Dreher (whom we have always with us) and Stewart Andrews . . . Others prefer Joe Pa trone's place . . . Patty Malcolm, Horace Early, Buddy Tal bert, Red Bullard and Bob Page have practically made a daily habit of it . . . We're still seeing lots of familiar faces on the campus . . . Betty Crews, Tri Delt, is another of the *gal,s who decided to come back for more education ..,. she's getting her MA in English . . . Bob White is back ..,. so is Hugh Hanna, Kappa Sig . .. and plenty of others we can't think of at the moment . . . Guess that's about all the news for today . . . except for the biggest news of all that we saved for last . . . Rannie Reaves, the gal that this column belongs to, is back at school . . . she'll take over for the next issue, and the one 'after that, and all the rest of them this semester . .. We sho' are glad to have you back, Rannie .. . So. long, kids . .. it's been fun. . .. COLD PLATE LUNCHES SOUPS . Plan For Date Bureau Halfed BY Uncle Sam A short blond freshman from Greenville named Arch McMahan, had the idea of eliminating this thing of co-eds sitting alone in Sims while the male student body wanders nightly in search of "someone to walk with." So what did he do? Well, he almost created a date bureau, but Uncle Sam said not for "Free." Arch had a form en titled "CUPID'S DATE BOOK," printed for each student enrolled, which requested a detailed de scription and photo along with seventy-five cents for each date acquired. When he approached Joe Lawrence, the campus mail clerk, in regard to placing a form in each box, he found that campus regulations prohibit the use of free mailing privileges for personal profits; so he was stopped dead in his tracks-unless he wants to risk fthree cents per student for postage.
