We arrived back at the grind after a fine 12-day spree which was highlighted by the short viz down Carolina way and found that things were still as confused as ever with most departments. At the moment we are in what is commonly termed as Out Going Unit (0. G. U. to the select inner-circle which num bers close to 5,000,000) where the time left before the hal lowed date of DIlSCHARGI,' will be done away with. And that reminds us, we wait right up until the last day before leaving the present duty and departing for Separation ben ter, so 15 June will be the day of days for the bald-headed swabbie. Approximately 18 June will see us back in Mufti for good if all goes well, that is!! But enough of this here wool gathering, leave us look at what's come about. Many of the ole Carolina Clan run into each other around these Ivy covered walls. Ran into Jim White about the first day back and holds down a job which classes him as a "Big Wheel." (As of "I'm a Big Girl Now; but supplant 'Wheel' instead of 'Girl' and you've got it right.) "Frenchie" informed us that he was planning to return Car olina way in the fall. Bob "Kappa Sig" Shook keeps the chow flowing for the "hounds" in a local galley, along with Marty Pearson's ole BUDDY, Ed Passel, who is also in a galley handling things in fine style. Del Lindbloom, an ex-Carolina lad, just pulled out of the Hospital after under going a rather serious operation but is back on his size 101.,'s and champing at the bit for FREEDOM. We don't blame him at all: Brother Mac Hammond bunks right beside the old Chick'en and that produces many a conversation about a certain 0800 French class which intrigued many an early riser. Mac is plying his talents working as a switchboard operator plis- general handy-man at the Officers Club. At least he's in the right surroundings for an ex-Officer Candi (late. We, of the more infortu,nnis, deal with the storage and return of Sca Bags in the local Bag Room. By way of filling up space leave us relate to the unsus pecting that we witnessed the ole Woodchopper, WOODY UERMAN, in the flesh the other night at the College Inn of the Hotel Sherman, one of Chicago land's better hostelry's. Woodrow Herman, aided and abetted by such !umiiaries as "Chubby" Jackson (a terrific Bass), "Red" Norve (you all will remember him with Benny Goodman ; nothing better in Vibraphones), and "The Blue Flames," was quite an ear-full for an up-and-comning Seaman Second ('lass. Les Brown will follow the Herman Ilerd on the 23rd of this month and you may bet your last semolion that The Chicken will 'be there for that affair. "Les Brown and His Bandl of Re known" . . . ugh! (That is Son, that is). 'There isn't too much more of note at this poi.nt in the game so we'll forced to dig. We hope that the various clubs, Base ball, Gold, Tennis and Track will b)e able to keep up the good work with Lady Luck's smiles. And so the time comes. Gamecock Netmen South Carolina T The newly crowned Gamecock state net champs and their season Saturday in a match with the Cita del at Charleston, their first match del was rained out. The netmen have had a fairly successful season in winning their first state cham pionship in quite a few years. The Gamecocks are undefeated in six intra-state matches and will be striving to keep their record clean tomorrow. The netmen have an all-over record of six wins and 5 losses. Two of these losses were to Bill Lufler's undefeated David son team, one to a very strong Ga. Tech team, and one to Kalamazoo, formerly intercollegiate champs, and the other loss was a 4-3 loss to Ga. that wasn't decided until the last match. The men making the trip are: Captain Bob Wickham. Alt. Capt. Tracy Barter, Fred At kinson, Been Chamberlain, A. J. Smith, Jack Hatch, Harris Tood, and Manager Don Barton. Emerge With ennis Crown net men should have no trouble in winning the state championship again and also prove to be a real threat in the South. The Game cocks won their state championship without the aid of a coach or any tennis courts upon which to prac tice or play their matcnes, so with the aid of a coach and tennis courts these hoys should go far next year. The Gamecocks have tentative matches next year with all state teams and also Duke. N. C.. N. C. Last Friday afternoon the Birds took on the Erskine Seceeders up at Due West. in the first game of a running bar gain bill. The Gamecocks were not to he denied and they pounded out a decisive win over the Seceeders by a score of 10 to 1. Chuck Ru dolph, titilating right hander, went all the way for the winners and al lowed only four knocks in doing so. After winning from Erskine the Gamecocks hopped on their bus and hurried over to Greenville to take on the Furman team under the lights Friday night. The Gamecocks were not able to keep the winning spirit up and were downed by Fur man by a score of 9 to 0. After a night's sleep the Game cocks were on the road again Sat urday this time journeying over to Clemson to play the Tigers before a home coming day crowd of four thousand. The Tigers were unbeat able that day and the Gamecocks went down to defeat by a score of 12 to 2.. . After this heartbreaker the Birds picked up their carpet bags and dragged back over to Furman to play their fourth game in two days and the second one of the day Sat urday night. The Gamecock's losing streak continued when the Birds lost this fracas by a score of 9 to 6. The first game will be played this afternoon at three and the second at the same time tomorrow after. noon. The Birds are expected to be near full strength fielding the usual lineup except at first base. Torn Newman will be out of the line up with an infected hand which was agitated last weekend when the Birds played four games in two dnys. Lefty Giles Clark will take over at first base. Slugger Runt Wil lis will he down at second. Willie has heen pounding the apple as of late and will be expected to do much for the cause this afternoon. Pepper Howell or Rip Ripley will be at short. Ripley who suffered a sore arm last week might be able to play in time; if so Howell will hold down center field. Little Andy An drews will do his usual stint down at third base and is also expected to add some potency to the Gamecock attack at the plate. Jesse Cox will do his chores in left field and will lead off at hat. Harry Parone. the Conneticutt Yankee turned rebel, will bask out in the spaces of right field.
