On The Ball With Ish Moore Believe it or not, that letter reprinted in the fourth and fifth columns of this page was actually read. in a P. C. stu dent body meeting! The old Blue Stockings must've been pretty hot under the collar about 'he little article our boy Jerry wrote two weeks ago-but then, Jerry meant well. Frankly, we think the P. C. lads made a pretty good repartee in the form of that little epistle. At any rate. it shows plenty of that ol' stuff called school spirit! Our slugging Gamecocks are invading Tar Ieelia land again . . . and this time, they're after Blue Devil bacon ! Our guess is that they'll bring home a few slices too . . . if 'Arry Parone keeps getting three safeties for every five trips to the plate . . . and if the rest of those fellows can develop that added punch that they so "ably exhibited against the Bulldogs of Georgia here Tuesday afternoon during that ninth frame. And talking about that contest, Catfish nearly pulled the game out of the fire during the ninth stanza by sticking his port side sluggers up to the plate against the Bulldog hurler who very obviously had a distaste for any one who batted from the wrong side. The boys did a swell job too. . . . Sonny Way, Rip Ripley. Sandy Andrews, and the rest of the Birds managed to fill the bases and drive in two runs before the Jaw-Ja lads were able to finish the game. Navy softball is really going strolng . . and it reached its peak Wednesday night where the Zoomboys of' Company 6 faced the sluggers of NROTC Company 4. . . . Wild Bill Pizza of the Zoomies turned in a no-hitter . . . and so did chunking Chuck Parham of the ZO's. . . . Two no-hit per formances in one tilt!! Of course. there may, be a dis crepancy there, since Jim Sellers claims to have breezed a fast one-base job thru Pizza's infield. Of course, there were a few errors . . . the Company 4 lads managed to make a few les than~ their opponents and came out on top of a 5-1 score. And that's almost as bad as Wednesday night's game out at Capital City Park when the Reds left even their most ardent followers agast by licking the Charleston visitors 20 8! Now the Reds are pushing that seventh slot mighty hard! Frankly though, we hope that those slugging Gamecocks have more energy than we happen to have at this particular time . . . we feel worse than the morning after a long night at Groucho's . . . and that is bad! Of course, there may be a reason . .. George Brier was gracious enough to let us plav with his Company Two softballers against the Zoombovs of Company Eight . . . and that game was too close for com fort ! It was merely a matter of' which team made the least number of errors . . . and we won by a nose! George Morgan and Andy Mashaw were really hot last Fri (lay afternoon in the intramural track meet .. . the Phi Kappa Sig "Sun Boy" took firsts in bo0th the 100 yard dash and the low hurdles and came in with a secondl in the broadl jump to take top honors wvith 1:1 points . . . and the shining light of Sigma Nu's White Star thinclads managed to take first in the 220. secondl in the 100. and to share honors w'ith George F'arris, Roy Young, andl Stev'e Trewhella in th(. half mile relay to garner a total of nine and1( a fou rth points for himksel f. inc identally, that d istanuce of' 19 fe'et 9 inches mlade by Jack Worley (of Lambda (Chi) in the b)roadl jump wasn't bad at all, conlsidlering the fact that the dlistance at most Caro lina meets this spring has ben only slightly over 20 feet! Congratulations to Charlie My3ers on his Iwo homers y'estertia. . . Also, to Ken Tarbell, "Moe" Brown, anid "l)uh" Nelson. . . anm all the rest of the happy souls. This will be the second of a two game series started between the Gamecocks and the Blue Devils yesterday afternoon. Earlier in the season, the Bird nine was embarrassed at Capital City Park by dropping two straight encounters to the lads from Tar Heella land. Grady Stott. third base man, provided the spark for the 1)uke nine during both contest here in Columbia with his heavy hitting. Rudolf, who faced the Blue Devils in their last same here, will prob. ably handle the mound duties this & afternoon, while Bruce Tate will handle the receiving duties for the Birds. The Blue Devils, always a strong club on any field, are expected to he especially powerful in their own territory. This, combined with the fact that the North Carolina lads always provide a nemesis for South Carolina. means that Coach Smith and the boys will have a rough day of it. However, if the Birds could develop that punch that they ex hihited during the ninth frame of the Georgia game, the Blue Devils may he in for a tough day them selves.
