On The Ball Withi Ish Moore a YESTERDAY'S BULL-FRESH TODAY There'll be a hot time on Melton Field tonight-football's back in town! Those "Black Bullies" under Captain Bo-Bo Carter will be rough and ready and all set to tangle with Dom Fusci's "White Wonders." But the time that final whis tle has blown and the last block ha been thrown, Carolina fans (and Coach Rex Enright as well), will have some idea of what to expect from the fighting Gamecocks when next fall (plus Duke. Alabama, and Clemson) rolls around. One thing's certain as far as we're concerned-it'll be one heck of a ball game. Both teams are evenly matched-and both have competent field generals. Captain Dom Fusci, of the Whites, a New York Yankee, proved his ability by making All-Southern tackle before becoming one of Uncle's fighting Bluejackets. But then, Captain 1o-Po Carter of the Blacks, a Tar Heel from Asheville, was also an All-Southern tackle before the war in which he served as a crew chief with the air corps. However, Ho-Bo will shine under the lights of Mel ton Field tonight as an end, since has was moved to that po sition when the lack of' hard-hitting flankmen became appar ent. Incidentally, don't be too surprised if you see last fall's hard fighting blocking back, Swede Hanson, operating from the center slot in this contest. Jay played center in high school; so he was shifted for the game tonight-which means that there'll be a rough time on the right side of that defen sive line-natcherly ! The cinder boys meet the Davidson Wildcats from just "north of the border" tomorrow afternoon-and this time we're counting on those speed demons of Coach Dupree's to come thru for an impressive Southern Conference victory. We wandered up for the )uke Ldebacle last Saturday - and strange as it may seem, our boys weren't so bad-the Blue Devils (devils, that is) were just better! Jim O'Rourke beat his best mile by 13 seconds to come in at 4:41-and still there were three of those Devils leading him! The shining light of the whole meet-as far as we're concerned, at any rate--vas hurdle man Jim Ratlif'f. who really did a swell job of th\owintr thoe eind"rs right back into the opposition'sl face. Jimmy won both the high and the low hurdle events with apparent ease to become high point man for the whole meet. And then, there was our bo'y Warren "I just love Jack son" Foote. who brought out the .Palmetto spirit and showed the Tar HTel people a little fancy high J.umping to take first place in that event. Not too incidentally, we (of "On The Ball") are counting on Buddy Riggs and Bird-dog Thornton, as well as the rest of the boys, to be plenty hot tomorrow afternoon when things begin to pop on Davis Field. Of course, Catfish and his bovs will have several reasons for knocking the old pill around this afternoon-and not the least of these will he sweet retribution-the Diamondeers are up against the~ Blue D)evils. The boys from the north have made the fatal mistake-they're step)pedl across the state line ! Cleanf-uip man 1Harry Pa rone-accor'ding to all oppon ents, the meaniest-looking hatter since the old1 "Bale''-is on the ball with his hitting lately. Andl then, Tommy ('ox is still hitting 3 for 4 andl so forth: so the Gamecocks have a swel!1 chance of tur'ning btack all op)position from here on-and you can quote us on that ( pr'ovide'd, ot' course, that we're right !) In Calse you've been missing Tracey Baxter's smiling pan aroundl the canteen this morni ng--don't worry-he and the rest of the racket-teers (and you can take that just one way, Kilroy !) are traveling this week-end, Optimistic char'acter' that we are, w re exp)ecting v'ictories over Geor'gia and Geor' gia Te~ch by t -time the lads at"e '.ck in the chicken- roost. Coach Dupre has Spent all week ironing out the mis takes of last week and promises to put a much improved team on the field.
