P'm -- - - -f ON THE BULL With Ish Moore Tomoricow afternoon up in Tar 11celia land, the fourth of Carolina's spring athletic programs gets under way as thirty Gamecock cinder stars square off with the Duke Blue Devils * in an attempt to knock those Southern Conference champs of last spring off the golden throne and turn the place into a chicken roost . . . and there's a pretty good chance that Coach Sterling Dupre's protegees will have done just that by the time Old Sol has finally settled below the Durham horizon. The tracksters have come a long way (running, too!) since seventy six aspirants first reported for practice almost four weeks ago. Hearing the sound of a starters gun last Saturday afternoon, we wandered over to Davis Field in search of a little dope and sunshine-and just in time to see "Bird Dog" Thornton lead a group of tired but game milers across the finish line. Another start-and eleven minutes and thirty seconds later, Coach Dupree was all smiles as lie watched Ted Meiter and Freddy Rueber swing into the last lap of that terrible two q miler. Ted won first place as lie crossed the line without so much as a hitch in his still-strong stride. He even watned us to take an extra lap with him for conditionings sake-another lap-440 yardsl Naturally, we thanked him with a nice "I've had mine for this week" line and rambled over to watch (that's al we ever do-watch!) Buddy Riggs, Bill Braley, and Ed Hotz bear down on the 440 to make it a photo finish. There's no doubt about it-Muchas poor Blue Devils will be looking at Gamecock heels tomorrow afternoon (and we of On The Ball shall just be looking!) Those Yankees are At it again! The Palmetto netmen suffered quite a debacle (page 113 of D-. Babcock's "I Want A Word" we made a A on that quiz!) Tuesday afternoon as those Kala mazoo lads kalchiined then 9-0! This afternoon there'll be a different story when the Wildcat and the Gamecock neet on the Forest Lake courts. The Davidson lads will be tough to stop, as usual, but they'll be faced by six very-determined South ^arolina racket-teers who wouln't very well appreciate losing two matches in one week. So we'll just say, "Lookout, Wild cat !" According to members of'the baseball nine, those Spartans ibuldn't d6'It again-Coah Catfish has now moulded those di'amond ladsnio a smooth working machine-as that errorless ..win over Fort Jackson last Friday and the victory over Clem son Wednesday prove'd. Pepper Howell came through with his second triple-Jessie Cox earned three safeties for five times at bat (and it could've easily been called four for five !)-First baseman Lefty Clark and pitcher Pinky Pinkerton have come through with four base bingles-and Everette Driver went the whole way to become Carolina's first winning pitcher. JUST 80UTTLEBUTT AND BULL That long-awaited no-holds-barred basketball game between champion SAE and Signa Nu finally came off Tuesday night. Steve Trewhella, Meatball Meeks, and Moe Brown joined the * Sigma Nit's to form a mighty potent quintet; while "Bird-dog" Thornton, Jay Hanson, and Bill Carr were added to the line-up for the already potent SAE squad. The champs came out with a 32-27 victory to keep their undefeated record intact. Congratulations to Joe Piedmont and Don Kiser on their election to honorary co-captaincies of the boxing team-Lolli pops to Dumas Turner for the fine job ie's doing over in the athletic office . . . The swimming pool is open Tuesday and Thursday evenings from seven 'til nine for recreational swim muing (and, boys, go over-even if it's just for a look at those '46 bathing suits!) . . nGet yout change realy for that spring football inter-squad game just one week from tomorrow. This'1l be your chance for a pr-eview of next fall's fighting Gamecocks . . E. B. Jones is runninig for sheriff in Pensacola, Fla. ! Nuff saidl -Adios and Hasta Luego, mi amigos.
