Dr. Buie recently was released from active duty by the Army. During his ser vice. he received the Order of the Red Star by th, Russian govern ment for his work as geologist with the Persian Gulf command during which he# had played an important part in establishing and maintain. ing supply routes from the Persian (ulf to Northern Iran for the pur powc of delivering critical materials to the Russian army. Hie also re. cived the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service in the United States arm. Aftfr hv was graduated from South Carolina in 1930 with a B.S. degree. Dr. Buir earned an M.S. de gr en at Lehigh. and the degrees of M.A. and PhD. at larvard. teach ing engaging in research at both institutions. Dr. Buie left Harvard in May, 1937. to take part in the geological exploration of Seaboard Oil com pany's newly acquired concession in Iran and Agrhanistan. During this period, he was in charge of a party doing oil and metals reconnaissance in Agrhanis tan. Returning to the United States in 1941. Dr. Buie accepted an assign ment with the Standard Oil com. pan. of Texas. In September. 1942. he left at 'he request of the army's chief of engineers to accept a com mission in the corps of engineers, rank of major. Dr. Buip was rj) troop duty with an engineer hattalion for a few months before being transferred to staff duty with the Persian Gulf rnmnand, during which he also se:ved as consultanti to both the Ru'sian antid Iranian government Prior tN' his discharev from active se-vice. 1r.
