Gamecocks On Deck with -_ Bryant Meeks To start this column of ON DECK I woulI like to give you a preview of the sporting world at Carolina this past semes ter. The start of this 'semester saw the middle of football in progress and the Gridiron Gamecocks not doing too well. We saw them play over their heads to tie a powerful Clem son eleven and at hand was a long and feared trip to Miami and the engagement wvith the strong Miami Hurricanes. You know the answer for the Gamecocks came back with a well earned tie. The next visit they took was that with the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest and after leading until the last two minutes the Gamecocks faltered and allowed the Deacons that final tally end another tie ball game on their record. A last week of practice saw the Gamecocks go into their last encounter the favorite and after rallying in the last half, vere defeated before a Ilonecoming crowd by the University of Maryland. This ended the gridiron season until word was received that the University of South Caro lina had been invited to play a return game vith Wake Forest in the Jacksonville Gator Bowl. The team had about five days in the Sunshine City of the South but the outcome was fateful to all Carolina supporters for the Wakes beat Carolina this time by a score of 26-14. A 90-yard run in the last ten seconds by brilliant "Dutch" Brembs was the highlight of the day. The end of footiball season brought into light the basket ball team and a host of navy and civilian candidates. They were greeted by Dick Anderson, a Carolina performer of old, and drills were started. None of the athletes had ever played with each other but with constant work and grim determination Coach Anderson did a swell job until Coach Frank Johnson returneld from a tour of dity with the navy. lie took the team aid soon the effects began to !; Ie cause the Gamecock Cagers started knocking off foes which had beaten them earlier in the season. The last coulte of weeks have held five victories and no (lefeats for the Game cocks. They are riding that victory trail and by the time this column goes to press I hope as velf as you that they will have taken the Wake Forest Deacons into camp with a blazing finish to their schedule. If they beat the Deacons they might find themselves in the Southern Conference tomrnament. Keep your fingers crossed for them cause they will need it. Our boxing team has done a swell job for if I'm not mis taken it's the first. boxing team inI the past few years at Carolitna. Three matches were schediuled with top-flight teams and although the plgilists came out on bottom on each occasion the opposing men kneiiw they had been through h anid were well pleased with the outcome. Littiv Joe Piedno mt was the victor each time exce)t. the last and that bei a draw. I believe Dick IusenburY beat evei'y opponlent in the score and literally. All the fellows did a grand job and all of Carolina is proud of them. If I know Coach Allen Shi they were certainly in shape after a FEW DAYS. Coach Allen also dlid a swell job with the I ntramur'al Bas ketball and the league is curtrently' running v'ery well. The SA E 's seem to hav'e the power' house a nd have yet to be deC feated as are the N A PPA A LPH~ A's. The league will run into next semester andi( the wintiner' will be given some worthy reward'(. In the 120 lb. class Carolina's classy bantam Joe Piedmont and Paul Gordy of North Carolina fought to a draw. Piedmont scored nicely with a lonst left jah on his shorter opponent during the first two rounds, but slowed up a little in the third, and Cordy connected with several telling rights. Over 3,500 fans packing the field house, watched Frank Johnson's Birds outplay the visitors all the way to hand the Tigers their first state defeat this season. Then the upstate boys, sparked by Pruitt and Rey nolds, crept up near the half and the margin at the intermission stood 26-21 for Carolina. Trewhella took the opening tipoff after the half in the same play that scored the initial goal against Furman last week and dribbled down to tally. Then the two teams began to match baskets with the Tigers holding a slight edge with their long distance ringers, and cut the Gamecock lead to two points, 39-37. Steve Trewhella then sank two foul shots and two fast under 1 the basket shots to push the margin to 45-38 with four minutes left in the game. From there the Game cocks had things prelty well under control and coasted into the win.
