USS Newman K. Perry, DDS8:',
March 17, 1943, at Orange, Texas.
The ship is namned in mcmory of
h1er hrother. Ensign Newmnn, K.
Perry. who died as a result of
burns received from a boiler explo
sion while acting as officer of tile
day aboard the USS Bennington in
San Diego harbor in .July of 1905.
The destroyer was named in his
memory upon the req(tuest of se%
eral of his classmates. They fur
ther requested that a nearest of
kin -hristen the ship. One of hi
classmates is Admiral King.
This ship was commissioned July
26, 1945. at Galveston, Texas. Corn
mander Admira Narman E. Smith
and his wife sent Mrs. Gunter pic

Recently, tle ship docked at
Chanleston for minor chanales and
repairs. Upon an invitation, Mrs.
Gunter was guest aboard the ship

Rho Chapter of Kappa Alpha will
sponsor its annual alumni tea
dance on Thursday, October 24, be
tween the hours of 6:30 and 8:30.
The dance will be held at the Jef
ferson Ilotel, and the music will be
furnished by Melvin IHemphill and
his orchestra.
The KA dance is a tradilion at
Carolina, being held each year after
the Clemson-Carolina game. It is
given in honor of the alumni, and
is attended by graduates from all
over the state who revisit the cam
pus during Fair Week. The dance
is part of the yearly festivities
which convince the returning alum
ni that the "ole Carolina spirit" is
still rampant.
Joe Reintjes announced the bids
to the dance.have been extended
but that all students, faculty, and
alumni are Invited to the affair.
The guests will be welcomed by
the newly elected officers: Joe
Reintjes. President; Harold Ilewell,
Vice-President; Robley MacDonald,
Secretary, and Jim Hudson Treas

and business-like manner.
