C., where them Devils are dustin' off the WEL COME mat . . for the past fort night the club's been doing double duty for Mr. Mac in preparation for the tilt on the morrow-you can lay that bottom cemolion that all hands are in tip top shape. Melton Field and the Stadium have both seen quite a bit of turf flyin' during the weeks prelim to Duke. . . . every minute on each plot has been used to greatest advantage. . . . there's no loafin' in this Mc Millan regime-believe me. . .. Tina Cannon, cute young lady popular izing woman scribes here in the Capitol City, presented herself one day last week to look over the scrimmage . . . many were wishing that she'd come more often . . .ah for the life of . newspaper world. . . . on a smaller scale, "David" Davidowsky and Sy Rapp two hef ty's fromN Manhatten tipping the beams at 240 and 220 respectively ... both have plenty of experience on the line and ought to see plenty of service . . . among their honors they both boast of making All Manhatten (N. "Pepper" Ho%vell, flashy back, out for awhile due to a cracked ankle bone . . . we noted well, as did the pocket book, where Michi gan slashed out at Great Lakes to the tune of 27-2. . . . "Moe" Brown (Jr.) got one large charge out of this win as did most of the GAN- 1 DERS. .. ."Skimp" liarrison. spark ler from last season around to watch his home town boys run through their paces. . . . the ole Skimper has an up-and-coming ball club down in Iartsville. S. C. . . . tickets went on sale for the coming season early in the week. so the vine tells us . . . they should go fast for the Gamecocks have a very representative schedule in the off ing. . . . Chick Bass, mellow voiced commentator, to put the Carolina matches over the ether waves for a local concern. . WKIX to be exact (PLUG). . he'll do the home games... Dan Ilarrilson, recently out of his bell-bottoms, to handle a big share of the passing and punting for the Garnet and BlRck. . . . Danny is an alumnus of sometime back and is still very adapt at the game. . . . did ye know that mentor Johnny Mac is a Sig ma Chi? . . .there was a 'popular book out some time ago, "The Rains Came" in the earlier part of the week we'd have sworn it was writ ten here in dleahl ole Columbia... this latter is self explanatory if ya reside in or around these parts. . . . a chartered bus will leave the campus on the marrow for Durham with only a limited number' of seats to be had. . . . too bad this (cannot he enlarged upon. . . . nothing makes the gang more eager for': battle than a hearty cheering sec tion. . ..well we're on the thres- ' hold of the 1945 football season and Duke is the first step through. . . heres' to the Bacon without the points. . . . time to hang up with the usual . .. adieu.... Running Duke plays against the varsity for the past week has placed a large number of the JV's on the ailing list. Two men from Coach Turner's Viobable starting backfield will most likely watch the gam from the side lines. Jerry Meacham, 180 pounds fullback, re ceived a head injury Wednesday Tennis Team Loses Meet to Air Base The Columbia Army Air Base pounded out a 7o2 win over the lads carrying the Garnet and Black on Saturday, September 8, here on the home courts. Meeting for the sec ond time this season, the Airmen again showed superior ability and snappy court play to take the match with little or no effort. The Car olina Crew, however, were not ' whitewashed" by a long shot as Charley Park took his singles play ana tnen teamed up with A. L. Lewis to walk off with a set of doubles. This was the extent of the carolina wins and they watched the birdmen walk away with each following encounter. Tracy Baxter again tried valiant ly to stem the tide of the visitors but to little avail, it was a ques tion of too much to buck in regard to the Air Force. Captain Baxter, chief racket-wielder, assisted by the aforementioned Park and Lewis plus Johnny Graham. Mac McWil liams, Nevitt Grove, Martin Web ster and Paul Puckett, will engage in a few more matches before the semester draws to an end. The tennis team is a little heard o' aggregation here on the campus but is still doing its bit to carry on foi' Carolina. They took fine in practice and will probably give Coach Billy Laval's team plenty to worry about before the final whistle has blown. "My team is going to be a win ning ball club." Coach Turner as serted. "Each man is working hard and fighting to take his rival's place in Saturdav night's starting lineup," Turner said. "As yet many of the starting berths are open."
