Enright Press-Box Splinters OREETINGS. Deadline has come and gone, but the sports page is as full of holes as Hiroshima, so work I must. And as usual when we are short of material, the column is disected to make little stories for various and sundry places. This has been done. All of my material is elsewhere on this page, and Im beating my guis for a bit of bull-shootin'. REX. The big news this week, of course, is about Rex Enright com ing back to Carolina. When, nobody seems to ky4ow. An in teresting sidelight on how little anbody knows about what the Army or Navy will do is an AP release dated three days before 19nright contacted the college. It was a list of coaches with no prospect whatever Qf getting out -of service any time soon. Our friend Rex's name topped the list. I talked with Presidett Smith, trying to get some definite facts oi when he will be here, but everything is in an indefinite stage. One thing the president did say was that he had been looking into the case very thoroughly and trying to get Enright back before football is over with. Could that mean pulling strings? I certa, inly hope 8o. CLEMSON. In reading tihe papers, I've been seeing a lot ahout Clemson lately. The Tigers do have a great publicity department, I will admit. But didn't it make a little mistake in printing the fact that the strub team licked the tentative varsity by a tremendous score? If your scrubs can lick you, Clenuson, look out for the Gaimecockis. President Smith, In an interview, said that he had been giving the case his utmost consideratiosn and had been doing all in his power to see that Enright got back before the football season was completely Dver. A naval lieutenant, he has been athletic director at the Naval Air rraining Station in Jacksonville, Fla., for some time. When LIeu tenant Enright returns, he will re sume his old position of Athletic Director, replacing Furman E. Cannon, who has been acting in that capacity for some time now. Although Enright has been offer ed coaching jobs by several other schools, he declared that it was his desire to come back to the Game cocks. Coach Enright was not only a football coach. Before he came to Carolina from Georgia, he had pro duced many outstanding basket ball players there and at the Uni versity of North Carolina. One of Enrights star pupils at Georgia (Frank Johnson) became USC's head basketball coach before En right came here.
