BIRDS ME SPORT SCOPE By BUCK CURETON Trusting that everyone has recovered from the effects of the Christmas holidays and of course New Year's celebrations, we once again settle down to the business of publishing The Game cock. Using a typewriter and a prayer, we went to work Tuesday and herein are the results. * Christmas Greetings -lad a Christmas card from my old friend Mac Erwin the other day postmarked U. S. Navy. Him today and he showed ime a letter he received from "Skimp" HLarrison, in California. Skimp wrote that he was staying at Santa Clara University and that the team was working hard for the East-West game. He also said he hoped to start the game in order that he might show a few big-time football players some real "Gamecock Spirit." In cidentally he started the game and gave a good account of - himself even though the East lost 13-7. ,* Bowl Games Football teams have a habit of pulling occasional upsets in tho regular season but on danuary 1. the bookieV were tearing their hair. California thoroughly tronnced Tennessee 25-0 in the Pasadena Rose Bowl; Tulsa wrecked the Raniblin Wreck 26-1 in tihe Orange Bowl; D)uke barely eked out a 29-26 Will OVel Alabama in a. nip and tuck battle in the Sugar Bowl ; and Oklahoma A. & M. defeated Texas Christian 3-1-0 in the Cotton Bowl. Southern California was picked to wiin over Tennieee bul in general was not. exp ectecd to win by four touchdCownis. It seems that 'Tennestsee made sonie serious errors whih con rtributed to the California score. For instance at the end of the first half with 5J seconds of playing timle remaining the Vol. dl"iteers had the ball on their own ten yard line. They tried out rupning play and kicked out from their own enl zone on second down. With 59 Seconds renalnimg in lie half. that was deli. nitely not smart football. In the first half the Crimson Tide got the jump on the Blue Devils from Duke arid had them topped 1 9-7 until the middle of the second period when the score went to 19-13. In the closing minutes of the first half )ile topped the Tide 20-19. In the second half the Tide cane back and scored another touchdowii, Imakinig the sc-ore :2(-2(.
