BIRDS DC DOOD LIN WITH DENNIS Witloutt time or space for a proper salutation in this, my entrance column,. "I'll .just say that "13uck' Cureton and my self will attempt to give you as complete a sports coverage as you have been aecustomedl to in the past, and get right down to work. It seems as if "Curly" Kuldell's layoff did him some good. lie was dropping his shots into his receiver's hands with unerr ing accuracy against PC as evidenced by the fact that he com pleted his first seven passes and then went on to complete five of the remaining eleven he threw. His percentage would have been even higher than it was, of course, if he would have thrown more short passes instead of the "hard to complete" long ones. This corner as well as every other Gamecock supporter hopes that he is as "hot" tomorrow against the Blue Devils of Duke as he was against PC. W ell, tomnorro%w is the day. (arolina's valiiantt (atmecoecks will huu- themselves in front of l)uke's roaring bowl bound express. Roaring is a distinct understatement. When I say )uke's bowl bound express, I mean Duke's roaring, rolling. exploding and any other synonym for power, howl bound express. ulike has a great offensive team as well as a great defensive team. It 's pass defense is one of the best :n the eountry. In Ton Davis, a dis charged Marine, Gordon Carver. a bock who resembles the sen sational Erie Tipton. and Cli' Lewis, one of the flashiest baeks ever to play for the )evils. l)uke has one of the best hackfields in the south. A stunned and shocked sports-loving nation was saddened to hear of the death of Allen J. Shafer, 17-year old freshmar e quarterback from the University of Wisconsin, who died :everal hours after he had participated in the Badger's 26-7 Dad's Da) triumph over the Iowa Hawkeyes. Shafer was injured midway through the second half. Uncon scious he was taken to Wisconsin General Hospital where he died. of internal injuries. The parents of Shafer evidently did not hold their son'i tragic death against football as the President of Wisconsin Dr Clarence A. Dykstra, announced that they had told him "yob must not let this interfere with the rest of the season." After discussing the accident with Shafer's teammates, Dr Dykstra said, "There seems to be a common feeling among all of them that the season's schedule be completed." I am sure that all of this great nation's sympathy goes out tc Mr. and Mrs. Shafer. A erowd that might well match the number of fans thnt at tended the Clemuson game is expected at the staliumtn tomorrow. And why not? 1)Duke in all prob)ah)ility will play in the Orango Bowl New Year's Day so this game affords many fanms a chane to see one of the nation's top teams in aci on. Carolinia' will be out,* not to hold down the sc:ore, but to heat the Blue D)evils. You Ganmecoek fans hiave am moruthI. use it. Show the t eami you 're behind them. See you at the game. Au Revoir.
