Testing of the new students will be held from 8 a. m. to 3 p. in. on the first day and registration will be held that afternoon from 3 to 6. On Tuesday, August 29, classes for the session will begin. September 4th is the last day for registration and change of courses. Final exami nations for the special session are scheduled for October 17 and 18. The following courses will defi nitely be taught: Astronomy 11 four credits; Business Adninistra tion 17- three credits; Economics 15-three credits; English 11-three credits; English -- three credits; English 21-three credits; Fine Arts (Design) 11- three credits; Fine Arts (Drawing) 13-three credits; French 11- three credits: French 21-three credits; Geography 17 three credits; Geology 33-four credits; History 11-three credits; -'-listory 12-- three credits; History 21-three credits; Mathematics (College Algebra) 11-three credits; Music Appreciation 13-three cred its; Secretarial Science 15-three credits; and Spanish 11-three cred its. Special lessons may he taken in organ, piano, violin and voice. One or two credits will be given with these courses. Primarily designed for freshmen and sophomores, as many as ten credits can be earned before the regular fall term which begins No vember 1. Excerpts And I Recent Naval F University ROTC U Cruise At Section E On twenty-four June, 1944, the R.O.T.C. Unit left Columbia for Mayport, Florida, not to return un til the first of July. During their sojourn in Florida the boys went out on patrol vessels. Despite the fact that the boys were deprived of their between-semester leave; grip ing was at a mininmum, and every one received unlimited value in ex pe.ienice and knowledge. As may be seen by the remarks collected below no hard feelings were brought into action during the period. Upon returning fronm Florida each student was required to turn in as dliary of the seven day period aw-ay from the Univ'ersity. It was from these diaries that much of the fol lowing was culled, sorted, and otherwise muisap)propriatedl. "Vinnie" Wilson fell overboard at St. Augustine to avoid his Satur day night bath . . . USC r Session To -ough Oct. 18 :d Aug. 28; Classes als Oct. 17 And 18 Branscomb Asks Students' Help Preserve Magazines For Library Files "In recent weeks a considerable number of popular magazines avail able in the periodical room of the University library has been muti lated." states Mr. Lewis C. Brans comb, head librarian. Life maga zine, especially, has been victimized, the damage ranging from a small photograph cut out to several pages slit and removed. The persons guilty of this dam age probably have not realized that a magazine cannot be bound at the end of the year 'f it is imperfect and to replace the ni.tilated issue with a perfect one is often extremely dif ficult. The library's periodical lit erature, both current and (old, is in constant demand by students and faculty. Those library users who persist in damaging these resources are depriving present and future L'niversity people of acces to un broken files of pertinent magazines. Some twenty-five people attended the meeting. Mr. Roy L. Garrett acting director of student activities, commented, "The spirit and enthusiasm exhibited by those present was quite encouraging and stimulating. If this same spirit and enthusiasm continues through out the balance of the year, the 1945 Garnet and Black will be a splendid book and will he out on time."
