Al Grygo
Al Grygo, the ecl-hipped South
Carolina half-back who flashed like
a comet over various and sundry foot
ball fields before a knee injury
dimmed his brilliancy in his final
season, is one of the finest ball-car
riers the state has ever produced.
Grygo, who hailed from Erie, Penn
sylvania, was nick-named "the Erie
Elf." lie came to Carolina when foot
ball was at .its lowest ebb in years,
and his ability greatly helped to put
the Carolina team back on its feet.
It was he who scored a sensational
75 yard run in the Carolina-Clemson
game of 1940, acclaimed by many one
of the finest plays of the season.
In that sane game, he carried the ball
for the first touch-down against the
Tigers.
His brilliancy was further shown by
The Birds sensational wins over Penn
State, over Kansas State, and over
the University of Miami in the high
light year of 1941.
A leg injury dimmed his football
hopes, but with tightly taped legs,
he ran wild in the Carolina-Clemson
game of 1941 to upset the Clemson's
Bengals hopes oi a bowl game.
