Columbia at that time boasted of a population of about ten thousand, there was no pave ment on the streets except somic flagstones on the sidewalk of Main Street, then called Richardson Street. The Capitol had no porches on either front or back, and those fine nionolithic columns now sup porting the porches were all lying prostrate on the camptis. The city water was so cloudy that if glasses were left undisturbed for an hour a sizeable patch of mud settled at the bottom. There was a reservoir on Arsenal Iill and one (lay a dead baby was found floating therein. l'he horse-cars stopped opposite the Confederate Monument, the hors.es were taken out and the car rolled down by gravity to the foot of Ger vais Street.
