W gve Y6M J Mt GAMECOCKS * By JIMMIE HILL * * All'Gone Well, it's past. The -Football season is a thing of history today fc the Gamecocks. It's not through for some teams who look forward I a post season game is one of the now-numerous bowls, but for the Bird it's through. I find it interesting, at tites to muse and meditate over what migl have been. We were set for this year. For some five years, Enrigt had worked to build a classic team, which would have found its way int 1b the nation's mightiest. This was to have been the year. We had a littl interference-obviously. It was in the form of a couple, sonic say thre stinkers from overseas, namely, one Adolph Shicklegruber, Benito Mu. solii, and the illustrious emperor Hirihito. It takes some of our th year's team to put those non-bowl prospects in their right place, behin the well known eight ball. From this, we deduce, we were not left with the boys we had antic pated a; a nation powerful eleven this year. But we were left with bunch \wno knew that they were over-scheduled, and were looked upo to do more than they were supposed and yet played their hearts out fc Carolina. The small bunch we had left after Uncle Sam finished gettin his allotment, knew that the boys who had left were doing a good jo where they were, and the present Gamecock eleven planned to do the best where they were. * Statistics . . . Not So Hot Their record seems to divulge only the one victory over the Citad, (thank the Omnipotence). Otherwise, the season looks to the outsid clans pretty bad. But I'm satisfied. I saw every home game, and tl UNC tilt, and I wasn't displeased with any performance except tlt Furman match. I understand that I missed some of tife best, too. know I was one of the biggest football boosters in the state after th. opener against Tennessee. Don't let anybody fool you, dear reader, t1i mighty Vols, who are Bowl bidden material, were definitely tied in C( lumbia that day by just as good a team on the fieldl After that moral victory, the Birds weren't in condition for Nort Carolina, but they played a real game against opposition that surprise me when it began losing later in the season. I thought they were vi4 tory material for the major portion of the year. . Other game followed. The West Virginia game, I understand, wasn any too good. I wasn't too disappointed with any of them. The sma Bird squad played really good (that "really" won't appeal to Babcoc< football for .the entire season, and without any further resume of t season, the Gamecocks may consider this a tribute to their ability, effoi and spirit in all the games. We have an All-American team in the sei vice, and an All-Gamecock team in the student body. What more coul the school ask? * All Southern Soss Topping off the season in a way to be appreciated, word comes of ti center position of the All-Southern team copped by our Soss. (Lou Cody-amon) Sossamon's ability has been recognized in this state ar1 conference for years, and this honor in his senior year merely puts i print what we have known all year. President of the Carolina student body, his honor on the gridiron migl have been even greater. As mentioned above, the Birds would have bee set for this year had conditions been different, and riding on the crest 4 a winning team playing the type of opposition we met this year, So! might have been conceivably, All-Americati. Uut conditions wercin different. Sparking a losing team, his honor is greater, and truly a tribul to real ability, win or lose. * Grid Gone . . . Cage Yawns The only thing definite to be learned about basketball at this writir is the fact that practice has started. The size of the squad, the possib prospects, all the rigamarole that generally ushers in a new sport does seem to be prpsent. News that Earl Dunham is going to the army in December won brighten the cage-anidcourt scene. Duanxi has been a consistent siarti for some time, and his loss will be felt keenly. In fact, the court scent looks strangely like our football prospects the beginning of the year. Small squad . . . lettermen lost . . . no tran! portation . . . and on into the night. Maybe we'll run into more teams in our condition. I have one< those sneaking feelings that win or lose, we're going to like our Bir Basketeers., * Mass Moider In A Minor Vein Walking around the campus, you encounter a bunch of guys who loo like we're going to look when we get back from (wouldn't cha like t know). I never saw so many guys looking like war cripples in my lif The scene of the battles that produce this carnage is anywhere yo find a couple of tenements, fraternities, or what-have-you meeting eac other on the field of honor . . . football honor. 631 .Main St. Golum&bia. .S * Make This A Practical Christmas * ~O4~ A'IDIt's the patriotic thing to do! Ken Roskie shone d despite earlier injuries, and Earl Dun ham played exceptionally. - With one day of practice, th k Gamecock squad invaded Charlotte ti meet Wake Forest on Thanksgivin .day. Out-manned by the Deacom~ u the Birds made the first half of th h contest -hard on them, but with fail ing manpower, bowed before number - in the second half and wound up o: the sad end of a 33-14 score. Sparking one of the earlier brigh spots of the game, Earl Dunhar scampered 85 yards for the Bird first touchdown. Perry Cochran o Wake Forest turned in a sparklinj _ performance in the opposition. Sossamon is the only South Carolina player to make the first or second teams. Earl Dunham and Ken Roskie, ~ dependable backs, both received honor - able mention. Dunham's ironman ~ performances and Roskie's powerful e line plunges won for them favorable r reports by all sports writers. 1 Although hampered by injuries, e Sossamon's great defensive work stalled many touchdown drives. He e saw little action in some of the games, but in the moments when he was on the field Carolina was strengthened noticeably. Against the Tennesscee Vols his brilliant defensive play was outstanding. Mentioned often as a candidate for All-American honors, Soss's selec ,tion on the All-Southern squad was - doubly an honor as he was chosen from a Gamecock team that, riddled with manpower losses, succeeded in winning only one of its season's en counters. One of his best perform ances was in the next to the last ,game of the season when he helped hold the highly favored University of Miami to only two touchdowns. Dunham and Roskie, mentioned with honor, have been consistent backs with endurance starring the former, and driving power featuring the lat ter. Both have turned in outstanding games for the Birds this season, hav ing saved many a game from route.
