Blackwell Reports Dive Bomber Sinks Ship In Arctic Fray Crew Took To Boats 50 Miles From Shore; Were Picked Up By British Ensign W. L. (Pete) Blackwell, Jr., '39A, '41L, of Columbia, who visited the Alumni office recently, recounted how his ship was lost in the Barents sea near the Arctic ocean sometime last sunimer. Enemy dive bombers attacked and sank the ship, leaving its creW to save themselves as best they could in lifeboats. The survivors were about 50 miles from shore, and a British cor vette picked them up after they had been in the open boats only a short time, Ensign Blackwell reported. They were carried to a north Rus sian port, where they remained for seven weeks while arrangements for transportation were being made. They landed in New York about three weeks ago, and Ensign Black well was at home on a brief fur- 0 lough before going back' to active duty. Paying special tribute to his gun crew, Ensign Blackwell said, "They were all young fellows, just out of training. They had never been un der fire before, but they opened fire promptly and accurately and were as cool as veterans. Together with the gun crews of other ships they were able to shoot down one Hein kel, and he crashed in flames." In describing the experience, En sign Blackwell said that later his ship "was attacked by a combina tion of high level and dive bomb- 04 ers, not torpedoed. A near miss from one of the high flying Jerries put us out of action. Two more bombs hit in the water only a few feet from our ship and sank us. We got into lifeboats and were picked up later by a British corvette." While visiting in Columbia re cently. Ensign Blackwell was in vited to speak on a statewide radio hookup to nearly half a million school pupils of South Carolina in connection with the scrap collec tion campaign. "If yu members f t JI Salvage Corps will keep the scrap coming in," Ensign Blackwell told his youthful hearers, "We'll be de lighted to deliver it to the Jerries and the Japs-and in a way that A will do the most good." Ensign Blackwell, who received his commission after finishing the midshipmen's school at North western University, visited the campus several times and 'reported to the Alumni office that he knew nothing of the fall of the Philli pines until he returned to the States. As the Alumni Front went to press, it was learned that Blackwell has been promoted to lieutenant junior grade. He is now back on active duty. Richard J.
