Gee, it's wonderful to be back again at CLrolinal After a summer of a select position with the Selective Service (Draft Bored to youse seniors) writing a colyum again is a pleasure. The campus looks grand, the stu dents look grand, the football team looks grand, and even the ole beat-up Gamecock staff looks grand. With my pur-zoot suit, pork pie, and bat tered typewriter, I am all ready for another year, so let's go with the news: 0 Pledging . . . Everybody's doin' it . . . all the frats and sororities . "slap a pledge pin on 'em before they change their minds" . . . Rush Week and all its glories are things of the past, so let's see when the pledging ceremonies took place . . K.A. had theirs on Monday night . . . Sigma Nus on Sun day night . . plus a banquet for the new boys on Monday night . . Pi K.A.s pledged on Monday night ,followed by a big fee dwhich fraternity members as well as pledges took an active part . . . yes, indeed . . . and the 14 S.A.E. pledges promised to "love, honor, and obey" on Tuesday night after which the actives decided they were all such good boys they must throw a party Saturday night . . . so they're going to . . . after the football game festivities are over . .. Kappa Sigs had their ceremonies on Monday night . . and those Pi Kappa Phi's pinned up 15 boys ... and gave a prize to the active who had talked the most pledges into saying "Well, all right" ... Dwight Holder won ... see him for instructions on enticing teluctant rushees. 4v 0 They Aren't That Way She: "Sir, I'll have you know I'm going to marry a Sigma Chi and a gentleman." He: "Hey, you can't do thatl' That's bigamy." 0 Sororities . . . They, also, had their day . . . Rush Week was most successful Hallelooyah ... about 90 girls are now wearing their pledge pins proudly . . since, last week . . . Kappa Delta presented pins to 16 of the gals . and took 'em out to supper at the Friendly Cafeteria on Thursday night Pi Beta Phi pledging ceremonies took place on last Wednesday night . with a cookie shine afterward in the sorority room . . . what's a cookie shine? I dunno . . . maybe it's when they give out cookies to ya and make ya shine 'em instead of eating 'em . . . Tri-Delts pledged 18 girls on lasi Tuesday night . . . and elected pledge officers . . . Alpha Delta Pi had theirs the night before . . . on Monday . . . Delta Zeta didn't think Rusi a Week wuz long enuff . . so they had a rush dance last night in the chapter room for a few invited guests .. . besides that, they pledged two new girls: Alice Norway and Rebecca Turner ... Z.T.A. had their pinning ceremonies last Sunday night * Sigma Delta . . Sigma Delta sorority will have pledge ceremonies next Thursday nighi in the Palmetto room of the Wade Hampton hotel. Pledges are: Frances Bass, Tesa Bluestein, Ceil Baker, Rozalind Evans, Marion Fink, Dori! Garfield, Virginia Stern, June Rephan, Betty Hirsch, Gertrude Karesh Lila Russ, Ruth Sholk, and Mina Silverman. Three rush parties were giver last week for the new pledges. * Did You Hair This? The kind of col lege togs you'll love faithfully. long after you've tired of fancy clothes, M od esat prices prevpl. ee ks Fraternity Pledges Increase 15 Per Cent Over Last Year Ninety-seven men pledged the 11 fraternities on the University cam. pus Monday night, bringing to a close a week of rushing activities. Pi Kappa Phi led in the number of men pledged with 17. Kappa Alpha-was second with 15 men, and Sigma Kappa third with 12 men. Other totals were Sigma Alpha Epsilon, .10; Phi Kappa Sigma, eight; Kappa Sigma, eight; 'Pi Kap pa Alpha, eight; Alpha Tau OneRa, six; Sigma Chi, six; Sigma Nu, five; and Phi Epsilon Pi, two. Fraternity rush week started Sep tember 7, and ended Sunday, Sep tember 20, at 12 o'clock midnight when silent period started. "It is interesting to note that while the male enrollment has con siderably decreased due to the war, pledging of men in fraternities is up 15 per cent over last year. Only 82 men pledged fraternities at the end of rush week last year," W. Frank Taylor, director of student activities declared. Mr. Taylor also stated that rush week this year was conducted in a very commendable manner by the fraternities.
