Intra Fina SPORTS rom th HILL-SIDE By GORDON HILL, Jr. THE CHANGING SCENE Now with all the football except the New Year games tucked away until next spring, the Carolina sports angle turns to basketball and boxing. But the 1941 Gamecock football team will always remain in the memories of students and supporters of Carolina. Many will remember the wonderful North Carolina game. Others will not forget the only real licking the Gamecocks took all year-at the hands of Georgia; but every USC'er will cherish what happened that October afternoon when the '41 Gamecocks stimulated the "Back to the Farm-move ment" or in other words, beat Clemson. Hand in hand with these were other things. Carolina won the state championship and was the runner-up in the Southern * Conference. Six Gamecocks were placed on the All-State and a sophomore on All-Southern; also, the Jacob's Blocking Trophy was awarded to a Gamecock and thirteen seniors wore the Gar net and Black for the last time. On top of all this, the University of South Carolina and all concerned decided beyond any doubt that they wanted Head Coach and Athletic Director Rex Enright to build himself a permanent dwelling here. Now for those other sports . . . WATCH 'EM GO While most of the Carolina students are enjoying this last week before the Christmas turkey, the Gamecock basketball q squad will be undertaking a long trip and meeting three top noteh cage tealns. The first game will be layed tonight in Cincinnati with Xavier. The Gamecocks will travel on north aid play Michigan State tomorrow night and then Monday night w%%ill meet Kentueky on tie swing back southward. There's a big (iuestion mark as to whether or not the basket ball team cal do as well this year as they did last. Last year was Frank Johnson's first year as the basketball coach and he (lid OK. That is, Carolina won the state championship and was runner-u) in the conference. The boys that will carry the burden of the team are Pres ton Westmoreland, Earl Dunham, Lanny Lofdahl, Stan Stasica and Jeep Rogers. Ken Roskie, who is recovering from a result-of-football broken arm, expects to join the squad sometime in January. Three stars from last year are gone. Dick Anderson and Fred Lytle are lost to the Army and Junie Hymson graduated. There'll be 10 home games on the 20-game schedule so let's watch our team go after the state and maybe the conference chiamionsh111i ps. WHAT ABOUT THE BOXERS? Thie b)oxing team is indefinite. Not as to whether it will be goodl or bad but whether or not there will be a boxing team. Various factors seemi to have something to (do with this but the main things are lack of boxing team applicants and scholastie standling of those who are on the team. The number of boys with whom Coach Frank DeMars is now working is half the number it should be. Although there are eight trying for the team, the eight weights are * not even all filled. At least one member of the squad will not be eligible for boxing until next semester and the way things look now, several other members who are eligible now, will not be next semester-all because of studies. At the annual Southern Conference athletic meeting last week, Coach Rex Enright express'ed his dloubt ab)out there being a box ing team at Carolina this year. Coach Enright said this wh'len the place for the conference boxing tournament was brought upl at the meeting. Th le selection of the tournament was not made. MUSINGS... Now that the Rose Bowl game is to be played in Durham, several students around school are planning to see it. . . This is one of those once in a lifetime chances . . . Intramural football seems to have gone over big . . .When Tenements 10 and 12 Sbeat the Delta Sigs 46 to 0 last Monday, I had a small idea that the winners had a fair team but that idea became definite when Chief Editor Deward Brittain brain-waved: "Tenements 10 and 12 have a good football team" . . . War or no War, I still think that next year's football campaign will teach Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina a few things. . . A big help to Carolina's team will be the eligibility of freshmen players if this is brought about b)y next season . . . Fencing Coach Jack Reese thinks that the girl 's fencing aggregation should have some kind of awvard. The girls are undefeated and untied in all-time competition; they beat UNC's skirt swordsmen last year--their one and only match of all-time. Westmor<land shot 371 points last season in 24 games, an av erage of 15.5 points per game. Westmoreland along with Lanny Iofdahl and Earl Dunham are the knly lettermen now in action. .of dahl is the ace dribbler of the squad and Dunhamn's asset is his great de fensive work. The darkhorse player of the dark horse team is sophomore Stan Stasica. Stasica is still somewhat handicapped with a sprained nnkLe from th 1' "ill State game but lie is expected to he in form before the scasmn is weli un derway. Jeep Rogers will fill the center spot.
