These Seven G Joe Hatksevitch-Guard Leo Kroto-Guard Krowing With irby BY JOE KIRBY' THE LAST ROUND UP If you are a football fan who hasn't had the good fortune to witness a collegiate contest this year, a WPA worker whose pressing duties have rendered such pleasures impossible, or a poor college boy like myself whose financial status does not permit New Year's day bowl games, you had bet ter hock your other suit and hie yourself off to the "City by the Sea" and take in Saturday's contest. It's your last chance. Saturday's brawl shapes up to be one such as is not offered to the public every Saturday. It's the renewal of a rivalry as old as your Aunt Susic, it's the battle for the honor of not occupying the Southern Confer ence cellar, and is the last collegiate game that you can see this season without benefit of excursion prices. Seriously it shapes up to be quite a battle from the standpoint of football. S Although the Birds rank as heavy favorites to take Rowland's charges ainto camp, the Bulldogs have been pointing for this game since they found it on the schedule. And contrary to popular expectation, the Birds will not be brinmmig with over- confidence when they trot ont onl Charleston turf for the first time in '20 years. From Coach Enright down to the third assistant water boy, the Gamecocks realize that the Charleston fracas will be no tea party, although the outcome seems fairly certain. WE SEE STARS This is the season of the year when football fans begin seeing stars, not movie stars, astronomical phenomena, or horoscopes but football stars. Their maps peer out at you every time you open thle morning paper over your eggs and coffee: All-State, All- Conlfecrence, All-American, All-Polish, All-every thing. This season the Gamecocks have landed representatives onl C.everal of these star studded aggregations. Al Grygo, "Jeep" Urban, and Louis Sos samon have been placed onl the Associated Press All-State eleveii. The same trio along with sophomore tackle "Boh-o" Carter were named onl Clem .son's All-Opponent teami, with Grygo and Sossamon as co-captains. Al gained a second string berth on the A. P.'s All-Conference team, while "Jeep" and "Soss" made the third string. Carter and Blouini were given honorable mention. It remained however to guards Joe Krivonak, Joe Hatkevich, and Leo Kroto (real name Krotozinski) to crash the All-American ranks. Fifteen teams representing tene ments and fraternity houses all over the campus have entered the field of competition each viewing for the mythical crown. Games will be played every afternoon from Mon day through Friday until one of the teams emerge as the champions. The season will be completed be fore the Christmas holidays begin. Eighteen complete uniforms will be issued to each team before each game, Game- will be regular tackle football and will be officiated by members of the varsity squad. The following is the schedule of games through December 13. De cember 5, Pi Kappa Alpha vs. Sigma Nu; December 6, Kappa Sigma vs. Tenement 25. December 9, Tenements 12 and 14 vs. Phi Sigma Kappa. December 10, Tene ment 21 vs. second wing Preston. December 11, Sigma Chi vs. Tene ment 242. December 12, Winners of the game between Phi Sigma Kappa and Tenements 12 and 14 will play Kappa Alpha. Three Birds won all-state recognition, three were placed on the Polish All-American team, and four were said to be toughest played by the Clemson Tigers. . "They're pretty good," the Tigers must have thought as they praised the playing of Grygo, "Bobo" Carter, Sossamon, and "Jeep" Urban espec ially and put them on their all opponent team. Sports writers over the state then went into their annual bull session and came out with their choices for the best players in the state. Carolina's now famous trio made this team.
