IN With Ed Patterson Notes from a nut in a nutshell...The Clemson game brought many upsets and mixups... Among the latter was one by tall, blonde, and 4blank, Mag Cain, who couldn't keep her dates straight and made one with both Lieutenant "Bubba" Southard and Phil Arrowsmith... People in the know say that the A.D. Pi and the Khppa Sigma frat should have a private telephone line so that others wishing to call in may get prompter service... The monopoly on the aforementioned lines is currently held by Grace Kilgore and Charley Lawrimore...Then some of the guys bereabouts believe that Irene Mars should be told that it is impolite to point... figure it out for yourself...In reference to telephones, the switchboard informs us that prompter service will be forthcoming if students will take time to look up the address of the person to be called in the Blue Key directory or city phone directory which now hangs beside every phone on the campus. Frank Sloan and Cork's Dick Towill swooped down on the Capital city club last Saturday nite and added fire to the pow-wow when one young lady by the name of Sybil was brought up.. .The Triple D's new football team, can now boast of membership including Jacks Johnson and Davis now that these two erstwhile lads have deserted the deserted S.A.E.s and donned the violet of these lovely ladies.. .Then "C square" Ariail and yours truly, along with a guy named "Pig" up at Clemson, are worried about the status of Bob Leonard in the affairs of serpent like Marty Harley... When we mentioned the football game (feminine brand) we forgot to tell you that it's for the benefit of Bundles for Brittain and not Briton as you might be led to suspect... Special note to carrot topped Leroy Dennis: Dear butch, we were just kidding about the other guy in the life of one Lillian Gale and you can truthfully sing "The Breeze and I"...The best viewing stand in the country on which one may get a glimpse of the campus curves, is the steps of the law school... If you don't believe it, ask Pete Blackwell, who daily delights in inspecting the gals on their weary way to class... There's a business machine salesman who has lately tried to sell little Philadelphian Peggy Forbes an adding machine or a record file to take place of the old proverbial string... Ernie Gainey's sister is a definite im provement in the family... In the venus line we'll mention that figgertive Mollie Heath is seen more and more in the company of Bill Mayes, with Betty Guthridge bringing up the rear guard... Continuing on the same subject, there are several local boys who wonder if Joyce Hetzel's publicity hasn't taken a trip headward... Struggling hard to get a place on the list of yankee talking beauty Beverly Thorne is present are: "Squeeze" Lemon, John Hemphill, David Aiken, Veneable Vermont, Paul Posey and Jim Rav enel... .The latter did the latest standing up act with Orangeburg's sixty-two inches of loveliness, Emily Wolfe... Don't get upset Emmy, for you can get as many on the string as any of them can. In case you might have wondered why the band fell flat on several of the notes at the political rally just ask Paulette West... But they didn't know that the name might be changed to Boykiq in the future... Maybe sometime about June.. .The posey planting Sigma Chi's have a pledge who has lately been seen knitting for Briton.. .Thus bringing up more posies, but of a different type, this time... Question to Willo dene: Where was the jealous spark when an A. D. Pian turned up at the K. A. dance with heartthrob Lumpkin... Jim Moore's slightly dis colored eye is due entirely to an operation... of the fistic variety... To Glendale, California and Elting Chapman in particular we send thanks for those kind words of solace and inspiration ... And to Polly Anne Wolfe, onions with a plea that she learn to take criticism which does not concern her... Columbia's Jimmie Merchant has taken to brag ging about the time he made with his room mate's former girl friend... Special note to "Egghead" Eggerton: The cute blonde' you help with her french is very mercenary and probably wouldn't speak to you if you didn't help her.... Anybody looking for Flinn Gilland will probably find him in Coach Rawl's office now that the latter has an assistant... The mess hall orchestra panned out about 200 per cent b)etter than anyone expected.. .And persons dining there Tuesday nite thought that the colored harmonica player was an advance engagement of the new band, until "General" Gibbes explained that it wasn't.. .Concensus of opinion runs that the only thing wrong with A.D.Pi's cute little Betty Fishburne is her timidity.. ."Shangai" Dingle's pulmonary pump pumps harder with the mention of the name of Newton, North Carolina's Make Warlick.. .At the literary society meeting Tuesday night barrister to-be Bobby DuRant was the only member to vote against inter collegiate football. Maybe we're dumb but we still can't figure out why marble-like Louise Nance tells us to pass the word on to John Hazelden as to where he could go as far as she wvas concerned and then gets mad at us for doing so... Continuing our hints on etiquette: If you want to convince everyone that you're an ex-hobo or a bum, use such uncouth phrases as "he stinks"... "nuts to him".. .or "smack him down" .. . Remember, you can think what you want.. .and still be a gentleman... Last issue one alleged columnist by the name of McKinney mentioned the reason for our obesity... A. Hall, commanding officer of Carolina's new naval unit, has announced a list of temporary petty officers who will serve for the current semester. On the battalion staff are: A. K. Mosely, battalion commander; B. M. Ellison, battalion . sub-commander; G. F. Bowers, adjutant; H. G. Charles, quartermaster; and J. M. Tobias, battalion chief petty officer. R. F. Pulliam is first petty officer of the color guard. In the bugle corps are: J. E. Wil kinson, commander; G. E. R. Davis, first petty officer and drum major; and R. H. Page, second petty officer. The unit, composed of approxi mately 100 members, is divided into two companies. C. Q. Sargent is company com mander of company "A" and V. E. Morris Rosen and Bill Walker will speak for the affirmative, and Bobby Durant and John Henmphill will uphold the negative side. Also next week the society will hear new member Samx Roach give his declamation which won first prize in the state contest last year. At the meeting of Nov. 12 the society will elect a new literary critic, this vacancy being caused by the non-return to school of Henry Simpson. Last nite the new band, The Carolinians, played its op ening engagement before a ca pacity crowd estimated at five hundred students. The orchestra, which is com posed entirely of students, of fers sweet melodies and rhythm of a faster tempo each night be tween 5:45 and 6:45 for the ben efit of diners and dancers who patronize the University cafe teria. Charles Gibbes directs the musical aggregation assisted by Arthur Baroody. "This added attraction is cost ing the students absolutely nothing extra, it's just another improvement by which we are attempting to make the student body better satisfied with their own cafeteria", said Miss Celia Swecker, manager of the eat station. This year the cafeteria is serving more people than ever before. To take care of this patronage the student person nel has had to be almost doubled. The be lief in personal honor alone as the means of preserving the reputation of a school, will work only in a very selected group, as at some privately endowed institutions Here, our student body is not chosen by the system of selective enrollment, giving us the disadvantage of a very varied philosophy of Honor. Our task is to re-educate these factions into a cooperative group for the honor system. Only if we have sincere cooperation, will our Honor system survive and be the potent influence on the campus that it should be. In the third place, students can detect cheating without actually seeing the paper of the accused per son. It is largely true, that actions leading up to an act of dishonesty attract as much attention as the act of dishonesty itself.
