Keitt And Gonza Competition Sc Oratorical Medals V May 15 And May 22 T Students interested in enteri oratorical contests are advised Charles Gibbes, secretary of th: week. Competition for the Keitt medal Is scheduled for Wednesday night, May 15, at the Euphradian hall, while the contest for the Gonzales award is the following week, on Mlay 22 at the Clariosophic hall. All members of the student body who have not previously won the award are eligible to enter. Con testants must prepare and deliver orations on any topic they choose, not to exceed ten minutes in length. The Keitt medal is given by Mliss Anna Keitt in honor of her father, the late Congressman Lawrence A. Keitt. The Gonzales medal is do nated in memory of Robert Gonzales, alumnus of the class of 1910. The medals are among the most coveted of forensic honors awarded on the campus. All who intend to enter are requested to inform Charles Gibbes or any other member of the debating council. Other members are Dave Baker, chairman; I. D. Karesh, and Deward Brittain. About 40 students were present at the social gathering held in Flinn I lall, announced liss Katherine I ey ward, head of the art department. Doctor Gibbes showed sone pic tures of the Cypress Gardens, Mag nolia Gardens, and many of the gar dens around Columbia, in addition to pictures taken abroad. "Ile was very generous in showing so many," said Miss Ileyward, "and the students thoroughly enjoyed it." Refreshments were served later in the evening and the students voted to have a similar party every year. Conference Elizabeth Bird Chosen Treasurer Of Group For Coming Session About 25 cabinet members of the YMCA and YWCA of the Univer sity attended the South Carolina YMCA-YWCA conference held here last weekend. Elizabeth Byrd, University junior, was elected treasurer of the confer ence for next year and De Armond Canaday, junior at The Citadel, was elected president. Mildred McKeithen, Winthrop, and A. C. Lyles, Carolina, are the out going president and treasurer re spectively. They were given a vote of thanks for putting the conference over so successfully. The principal speakers at the con ference were Dr. Frank Pool, Fur man University, and Rev. J. 0. Smith, pastor of the Washington Street Mlethodist Church, Columbia, S. C. Others helping with the program were: R. G. Bell, YMCA secretary at the University and Hawley Lynn, director of the Wesley Foundation for University students. Representatives from Carolina, Clemson, Winthrop. The Citadel, and Furman, attended the conference. One of the aims adopted by the findings committee for the conference is to have every college and univer sity in South Carolina represented at the next meeting. group has built a reputation as a first class musical organization. In the past year they have represented the University at various meetings and social functions. Another trip is planned by the club for May 19. They will visit Camden, Charleston, and the lower part of the state.
