Press Bate Collect By George Zuckerman MEMOS OF MY GIRL FANNY FORTNIGHTLY: DEAR BOSS: Even though you have to publicize the Southern Conference boxing tournament, I still think you did a dirty trick when you left me to fill out this blank. I guess if I do all right, I'll be a real friend on your knee . .. get it? You know after that gag, and I swear it came just like that, I think you ought to forget about writing this column every w'eek. It would certainly please K. S. K. Furthermore the way editor Hendley moved your picture around prompts me to believe that next week you'll find your fotoed face in the eighth column. I don't see how -lendley can worry about your picture and still write editorial love notes to that Heyward gal. By the way, Dinky Williams dropped in the office today and left the opinion that Musclin' In has spread over seven columns of the editorial page. Since he has been cover ing the Camp Jackson war, Williams has changed. After work is over he reads up on military maneuvers, then goes around and fights with his girl friend. Bob Greenfield came in about noontime and said he wanted to take you out to lunch at Bihari's. Told him you were busy, lent him thirty-five cents, and he left. Nice friends you have. Don't forget I warned you to stay out of the gutter. Ed McGrath called up to tell you that he enjoyed your column of last week. Frank Wardlaw had to hang up the phone because I fainted. Silly, wasn't it? Anyway I think I'll nominate the Passaic radiator as the telephone voice of the week. Could I do voice? A letter came from that elongated screwball, J. Martyn Hodes. It was a special delivery air mail missive. And, you guessed it, it contained three used theater stubs, two bus tickets, and a clipping from a Chinese newspaper. Also have here a card from that gram matical grouch who notes that you left out two commas in your column last week. If I knew his address I would write back and tell him you will write your column in a coma and think of commas. Some joke, eh boss? You know every time I think of one like that, I say to myself, gee, this is easy. I think I'm getting in the mood . . . and not for what you think. Get a load of this: Jean Withers' society column is in a hellava fix with the bigwigs. I understand all the items are behind the eight ball . . . wow . . . I also hear the conteen society has been revivi FRYed with the return of that blonde Georgia peach . . . by the way, Billy Woods walked through the office, mentioning on the way out that you still owed him a book review of "Johhny Get Your Gun" . . . and I remarked, is that THE book he read? I don't know what gets me in this mood; mvst be your typewriter. Now that I am writing to you, and for you, I want to say again that I'm still mad because you didn't invite me to the Gamecock party, even though, as you said, it turned out to be a philosophical festival with Confucius prevailing . . . . the four dots are to let you know I'm thinking up another Confucius say . . . . here it is: Con fucius say Phi Beta Kappa keys don't open up safe deposit boxes some stuff. I ain't no squealer but your staff here-Brittain, McKinney, Law, and Morton-is getting spring fever. They just won't work. All they do is look out the back door to the tennis courts and shorts. Can't do a thing about it. But then, like Dorothy Lamour says, what's wrong with a sarong? There's a letter on your desk from the Biltmore Lumber Com pany. The motto on the back says build more with Biltmore. What are you doing? Building a log cabin to write your novel or are you thinking of running for president? Or maybe you just want to hide from Buck Rogers? Boss, after you get that boxing tournament over with, I think you ought to write a column about the University Players and "Dark Tower". Because if you don't, I think we'll have to pay our way to see the show this time. \Vell, I think I filled enough space, and besides you don't pay me for overtime. Think I'll quit and marry an undertaker. I hear business is swell. People are dying today who never died before ...well I'll quit ribbon you. Your pal on pay day, Fanny). --Southern Conference (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) And so the stage is set, waiting for the timekeeper's initial bell. As al grand finale to this year's tournament, the University Social Cabinet will honor the 1940 conference champs andl their sponsors with a dan1ce in the gym.
