State Senator Henry R. Sims ol Orangeburg County, the outstanding authority on the social security ani public welfare program in Soutt Carolina, made an excellent talk be fore an interested group Wednesday night at the Euphradian hall. Sen ator Sims was the first speaker ol the season presented by the Studen Forum. He was introduced by Rich ard Towle. "South Carolina needs men and women who will think for themselves, and then after making up their minds, will go forward, working for the welfare and happiness of the human race," stated the senator. The senator discussed thoroughly the old age assistance, aid to the blind, and program for dependent children. He emphasized the fact that the state spent approximately $48 per year for each of the 23,000 needy aged while at the same time spending $250 per year for care of the convicts in the penitentiary. Apparently it pays a man to be a criminal in a way he brought out. The main purposes of the program are essentially to provide security for our citizens. After the old age bene fits from the pay roll tax go in to effect the welfare program's load will be reduced. Then in aiding the depnd ent children criminality and way wardness will be prevented. The state is actually making an invest ment, stated Senator Sims. G. Christophersen, director of the University Players. "I would be a ruined man if thieves should break into the properties room." The Players after searching far and wide, have at last found all the necessary stage properties for the pi rate thriller. The total value of the odds and ends on the stage of Dray ton Hall is over $1,000. Two of the pirates appearing in "Captain Applejack" will be decked out in colorful sashes, one from Ara bia, the other from Rome. These sashes, both over fifty years old, are worth about $200 each. No pirate melodrama would be complete without an assortment of knives, swords and pistols. The Play ers have unearthed an Arabian poig nard once carried by an Emir, or chieftain. It is said that the dagger was once used in a Hollywood pro duction and that one of the actresses was accidentally, but seriously, stabbed with it. Another relic found by the Players is an ancient pistol which once be longed to a pirate ancestor of the Harrelson family. This old blunder buss is worth, as a curio, probably its weight in gold.
