BiddiE Freshman Seeki Title For Third 1 Two Down, Tw< Carolina - Citadc Catrolina's freshmen gridders, Ilnonley ill tle state cham111pions1 BuIllp1)s of the Citadel in the I ton tonight. A in over the (itadel vill team as their last hurdle in thei The Biddies are strong defensive-4 ly. No excuses have to be made for the line but if a wouid be touch down seeker breaks through he is met by Sozsman, so far the out standing performer for the fresh mien. and john Leitner. On offense, the midget bolt of lightning, 'Mciver Riley, won't be so hard to stop iH ou can catch him, but catching him is a different story. Leitner, fore mentioned as a good defensive back, is one of those guys that y'ou can count on for three or four yards through the line every trip. The rest of the squad, although they- fail to make the headlines, are all capable of playing good, heads-up football. As far as Citadel is concerned, they lost a heart-breaker to the strongest Fuirman freshinen team that ever puffed up and blew out of Greenville, 18-6. This year's Petoskeymen have so far lived tip to the record of last year's Biddies being undefeated in the state and heavy losers to Geor gia, who is still seeking revenge for the beating they received two years ago, when Grygo and company burned up Augusta as well as the little Crackers by the score of 25-0. The team of ':17 then ran through Georgia also downed all state com petition and went through the sea son untied, undefeated, and un scored upon. That's some record for the future first year wearers of the Garnet and Black to 1,ive up to. Probable starting lineup: LE-S. Nowak. LT-Carter. LG-Brown. C-Sossaman. RG-Coman. RT-Hayes. RE-C. Nowak. Mittmen Don Gloves For First String Work The University of South Caro lina's mittmen donned the gloves for their first dlay of contact wvork Monday afternoon. Coach Frank DeMars has been drilling the boys on the fundamentals and getting them into condlition for the past two weeks. Aproximately 15 ptugilists are now out for the team. The 155 pound class and the 165 pouind class arc still lacking ex p)eriencedl fighters. H erb)ert Hostain. has been ruled ineligible and this leaves the 175~ pouind division with-. out a caindidte. The featherweight, lightweight, and welterwveight positions are the most sctught after on the team, with three or four boys out for each weight. Clinton Churistmtas and Art hur Fischer are the most experi encedl fcatherweig.hts trying out. In the lightweight class Sol hlatt a:d 'T. HI. Irving Granoff, senior tackle, supported Crews and Brown by putting up a one-man 1\aginot line against the V-Va'ians. Scoring In Second And Fourth After receiving the opening kick off, West Virginia spent the first period feeling out the Gamecocks, never crossing into southern ioil until the second quarter. After a roughness penalty, the Mountain eers drove to the Bird 24-yard line. From here Carliss faded back and tossed a pass to Seabright, who galloped across the double line for the first six pointer. The attempted conversion was wide. The Gamecocks came out after the half with new spirits and on the kick-off Joe Grugan took in the oval and started down the center of the field, breaking into the clear on the imid-stripe seemingly headed for a score, but coming from nowhere a Virginia man got to him and stop ped him on the 10-yard marker. After making a first down on the Mountaineer three, the Birds fum bled and the ball went over. The Gamecocks never threatened again until the touchdown jaunt of Gru gan's came. On the try for con version after the touchdown, El ston's kick was blocked. Lineup: West Virginia South Carolina LFE- D olly .................................. Y. "Dutch" Wagener, can remember. New nets have been placed on the two varsity practice courts to afd the cause. A meeting of team members will be held next week to elect a captain and a manager and to formulate plans for further fall practice. Already a number of northern teams have written for matches with Carolina and talk in the tennis cir cles is concerned with what kind of team the Gamecocks can put on the courts next season. Carolina will have a great one-two punch, undoubtedly, in Heyward Bel ser, a senior, and Stanley Brose, sophomore, but from there the situ ation is hazy. Everything depends on the eligi bility of two star performers and whether another man can get back into tennis stride after a one year transfer to the baseball diamond. "Buck" DuPre and Clarence 1ibler, who were red hot in high school in doubles competition where they won the state high school doubles cham pionship, are having troubles with the old jinx, scholarship. Bob Green field, a fair raquet-swinger when in shape, has not played for a year while he was pitching on the Game cock baseball team and lie will have some trouble there. . One of Coach Wagener's biggest hopes is that his sensational woman star, Sara Rushton, will come through and hold (own one of the team positions, and if her record this summer in 'tournament competition is any sign, she should burn up the courts next spring. - She is now champion of North and South Caro lina, having won that title at the Hartsville tourney. Most remarkable of her summer campaigns was the two clean sweeps that she registered at both the Dar lington and Ilirtsville jousts. In both she took the women's crown, was co-champion with Miss Dolly Sllamby in women's doubles and With Sam Daniel, took the mixed dlou bles title. In other tournaments over the south she did just as well. "If Sara keeps up that style of play, there is no dloublt but that she will play on the Carolina men's teni nis team," Coach Wagener dleclaredl. -Euphs Say (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2) son, WV. HI. Carolina-Clemson Intra Mural Winners May Meet Declaring that other schools' re plies were very enthusiastic, J. A. Crawford, director of physical eclu cation at the University of South Carolina, prepared this week to pro ceed with his plan to have the win ners of their respective intramural basketball tournaments at all the state colleges to come to the Caro lina Field house for a state strictly amateur tournament. Besides attempting this entirely new angle in state athletics, Craw ford intends to go still further, weather and finances permitting, and challenge the Clemson intramural football winner to a game with the Carolina champions. Should this football game be played it will give spectators a view of amateur college football also, something that is very rare on mod ern college gridirons. However, there will be difficulties to be faced before either the basket ball tourney or the football game will be played. First finances must be considered and next the season for both is over wlhen the intramural tourneys get going and there might he waning interest. Of the 2079 y ards gained by the South Carolina football team last seas-on, 2523 yardls were gained from scrimmage and 556 yards from forwvard passes. The Game cocks made 80 first downs, and completed 30 out of 97 attempted passes. [ AM TIAKlNO TITX ORIDE1 AND) ANY STID N INTl ONE AT TIIIE SPECIAL P: ('LUB RIIOIULD SI JIMMY W. ToL The "Hello Joes" this week on the University of South Carolina campus were not for the guy who just got back from the vaudeville show but for Joe Grugan, junior halfback, who staged quite a show at the Orangeburg Fair last week. In the fourth quarter of the Gamecocks' battle with West Vir ginia, Grugan . returned a Moun taineer punt 85 yards for a touch down to give Carolina a 6-6 dead lock with the husky hillbillies. All I afternoon long Grugan was so adept r in the art of running back punts t and kickoffs that the West Vir- I ginia boys thought they were punt ing a boomerang instead of a foot- 1 ball. Thus, after two seasons, it ap pears as if Joe has finally severed his pigskin partnership with Joe Jinx. As a sophomore last fall Grugan impressed Coach Rex Enright with his bruising style of play-hard running, crisp blocking, and ef fective punting and passing. But before the gridiron guns really started booming, Grugan broke one of his ankles and did not don the moleskins for the remainder of the season. Last spring Joe demonstrated his athletic prowess on Catfish Smith's baseball nine, gaining the rating of the number one hurler on the Caro lina pitching staff. When the Gamecocks reported for the pre-season drills this fall, Enright looked to Grugan for some expert backfield performances, and the 160 pound junior, in the game with Catholic University, started to rip the Cardinal line to pieces. But the drive led only to injury and Joe was on the bench once more. Philadelphia sports writers were disappointed when Grugan, a home town boy who starred on the local gridirons and diamonds, (lid not make the trip to the Quaker City for the Villanova game. But the scribes did not miss Joe any more than did Enright.
