standpoint of impressionistic real
ism," said Mary Desportes, in
charge of lighting, "new and in

Miss hay, Marshal; -professor of
art at the University of S6uth Caro.

Art Association in Sumter, S. C.,
Friday afternoon, October 6, at
which time the, University "art de
partment presented an exhibit be
fore the Art Association.
Miss Marshall'? address included a
discussion of the growth and prog
ress of the University art depart
ment. She also gave a list of the
names of several graduates in art
from the University who are now
making good in New York City and
other metropolises.
"The Art Association appeared
very much interested in our exhibit,
which was composed of work from
the advanced classes," Miss Mar
shall stated.
Law Announces
Engagement
Of interest to all students on the
campus is the engagement df Dru
silla Goodwin to Dr. Edward H.
Law, which was announced last
week.
Drusilla entered school here last
June, and attended the summer ses
sion, transferring from Brenau, in
Gainesville, Georgia, where she was
an Alpha Xi Delta. She is the
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. I.
Goodwin, of Holly Hill.
" Dr. Law has been the University
physician for the past two years.
He is originally from Pacolet; he
went to Vanderbilt Medical School
and practiced for several years be
fore coming to Carolina.
The date of the Adding has not
been definitely set. The bride-to-be
says that she will probably finish
this school year out before the cere
mony takes place.

Miss Evelyn Tidmarsh, instructor
of secreterial science at the Univer
sity of South Carolina, spent the
summer studying at New York Uni
versity and while in New York at
tended the World's Fair. Miss Tid
marsh was in New York at the time
of the arrival of the King and Queen
of England.

Because Of Fair

day," said Dr. Hugh Murchison,
chairman .of the chapel committbe,
"because of the holiday declared for
the State Fair."
Chapel will also be discontinued
for next week because of the Orange
burg Fair holiday. Dr. Murchison
said that there would be no chapel
program until Friday, November 3.
The chapel will meet every Friday
after the holidays.

Austin, Texas-(ACP)-A new
wrinkle in literature evaluation
grading books by warfare's stan
dards-has been unc--vered here by
Donald Coney, University of Texas
librarian.
The National Library of Edin
burgh, Scotland, according to Mr.
Coney, now rates its books and
manuscripts "A", "B", and "C",
with an eye to preserving its most
valuable material in times of war.
"A" books are to be protected
against air raids 'at any cost", "B"
books, if possible. "C" books con
stitute the others, Mr. Coney said.
"We've been trying to collect only
"A" books here," the librarian of
the University's 565,000 vlume c:l
lection commented, "but it appears
that the Scots have devised a novel
use for "C" material.
Scholarship Offered
Pi Lambda Theta, national associ
ation for women in Education, re
cently announced three awards for
significant research studies in Edu
cation on any subject in keeping with
its national study program.
The awards, valued at $250 each,
will be granted on or before May
15, 1940, from the fund of the Ella
Victoria Fellowship.

high schools, professiotial clubs, fo
rums, and radio stations. Most of
his 'talks -are about Nfazism and its
evils. The former itatesman still
contributes to many American and
European periodicals.
At present Mr. Sollmann is a pro
fessor at the Quaker graduate school
in Pendle Hill, Pa.
However, he still lectures all over
the country in the interests of de
mocracy and world peace.
During the week of religious em
phasis at Carolina, Mr. Sollmann
and Roswell Baines, New York City,
will lead the daily seminar on "Chris
tian'ity Versus Communism, Fascism,
and Nazism." This forum will be of
special interest to those students who
are keeping up with current events.
Mr. Sollmann, as a result of his past
experiences with totalitarianism, will
be able to give much information that
in not generally known about the
dictatorships.
Girl's Physical
Program Expanded
The girl's physical education pro
gram this year will feature swim
ming, badminton, archery, and the
fundamental skills connected with
each.
Basketball and volleyball will be
added Dec. 1, when winter sports
begin to get in full swing.
The dhte for the October swim
ming meet will be decided upon in
the general meeting of the Women's
Athletic Executive Committee.
The intramural volleyball tourna
ment will be held in November; the
inter-sorority basketball tourna
ment sometime in February.
