English Department
Swamped With Work
"Oh, heck, there's another onel"
This ejaculation came from Dr.
Havilah Babcock as he picked up a
theme paper.
The English department is re
quiring more written work than
ever this year, and the professors
are up to their ears in work, read
ing and correcting papers.
Many glaring mistakes are evi
dent in the students' work, but the
professors still hope for the best in
the days to come.
With so much written material
on hand, the English department
doesn't have much time for play.
If the students think they have a
hard job writing, pity the poor
teachers, who have to read 50 tc
100 papers a day, although some
get a great deal of pleasure from
the papers.
The idea of having so many
themes is to emphasize competence
in the use of written and spoken
English. One of the primary fac
tors in modern life is the ability tc
express onesself in writing.

Service Club
The Carolina Christian Service
Club, sponsored by the Y. M. C. A.
and the Y. WV. C. A., is doing a
good job in promoting good will for
the University throughout South

The Club has (lone wonderful
work in several institutions, includ
ing the Alms House, Girls Indus

State Park, and the Penitentiary.
In all these places the club has met

and experience to those interested
in this field of work, the Service
Club provides the opportunity for
Christians to follow the example of
Jesus in ministering to the needs of
less fortunate persons.

Leading Lady
Of USC Tennis
Takes Honors
Sarah Rushton Does
Well In Summer Net
Tilts; Wins Two
Sarah Rushton, University of
South Carolina's "leading lady" of
tennis, had an eventful summer as
she entered three major tournaments;
she reached the finals in one and won
the other two.
First, Sarah entered the Biltmore
Forest Country Club tournament,
near Asheville, N. C. Although she
was not seeded, she easily reached the
finals. However, 14 year old Doris
Hart, of Miami, Florida, eliminated
her.
Returning home, Sarah entered the
South Carolina Closed tournament at
Darlington, S. C.
Although seeded number two, she
copped thc singics championship.
Then she teamed with Dolly Hamby
and they swept through the doubles.
'With Sam Daniel as partner, the
mixed doubles crown was annexed.
After Darlington, Sarah entered
the North and South Carolina Closed
tournament at Hlartsville, S. C. This
tournament proved to be a repetition
of the one at Darlington as Sarah
won handily.
