Social Workers Hold Conference Faculty members of the University of South Carolina taking part on the program of the annual conference of the South Carolina Conference of So cial work, which opened on Nov. 1 and will run until Nov. 3, include W. H. Ward and Ellison Smith of the extension department, R, G. Bell, director of the University Y. M. C. A., and Prof. S. M. Derrick of the ec onomics department. An invitation was issued by Edmund P. Grice, Jr., of Charleston, pesi dent of the conference, to all uth Carolinians who are interested in the welfare of the state to attend the meet ings. The meetings will be held at various places as each phase of work is taken up. Nationally famous speakers will be present as well as a brilliant array of South Carolina talent. Education health, recreation, family case work, and the social security act will be dis cussed. --e. W. a. -Dormitory Continued From Page One The date for the beginning of con struction of the new building has not yet been announced. The rooms in the building will rent for approximately $35 per semester. At the present rate of growth of the University, the present dormitory space, already filled to capacity, will not be adequate. The construction of a woman's dormitory, already be- t gun, is the fulfilment of one of the University's greatest needs. The new men's dormitory is fully warrantedr by the great increase in the enroll-. ment of male students during the past few years. --U. U. 0. Many Grads Secure Jobs University graduates of the School of Education who were planning to teach this year have accepted positions in various schools in South Carolina. Margaret Davis is teaching the I fifth grade at Bianey. Harriet Holman, who received the Bach elor of Arts degree in Education in 1937 and the Master of Arts degree in 1938, is teaching Eng lish in the grammar schools of Darlington. Jane Job is teaching arithmetic in grammar school in the Ashland Public Schools at Ashland, Ky. Lynn Kalmbach is teaching mathematics and coach ing athletics at Mullins High School. Mary Sutton is teaching English in the Ridgeland High School. Mary Lou Spearman is the teacher librarian at Hardee ville. Other 1938 graduates who have obtained positions to teach are: Harriet Brunson, Lucile Gale, Ruth Dove, William B. Caston, Thomasine Grayson, Carolyn Gun ter, Margaret Hawkins, Eugene L. Library Gifts Are Received Three outstanding gifts have been -ecently presented to the University >f Soth Carolina library. The family of Col. Fitz William UcMaster has added to the McMaster :ollection in the South Carolina room wenty-seven books and pamphlets ised by Mr. McMaster at South Caro ina College. Twenty books from iis private library, including a book )f the dramatic works of William Shakespeare, which Col. McMaster iad when a prisoner of war at Fort )elaware in 1865, and forty mis ellaneous papers were also given. Col. dcMaster was at one time librarian of the University library. An oil painting of William Porcher Ailes, a former president of the Uni ersity, was presented by his daughter, drs.
