By slowing the Villanova "swing time" attack to waltz time, the Car olina Gamecocks gained a 6 to 6 deadlock over the Wildcats at Or angeburg last Friday. . This sen sational tie was acknowledged one of the upsets of the football week. Villanova outplayed the lighter Gamecocks, but except for its touch down it was stopped by an alert de fense on every threat. The Penn sylvanians ran up eight first downs to South Carolina's five, one of which was gained by penalty. Two booming kicks by Dewitt Arrowsmith for 70 and 60 yards in the first period enabled South Caro lina to stave off threats after How lett had broken away for runs of 32 and 31 yards. Clary set Villanova back in the second period with a 52 yard quick kick. Several times, it looked as if the Villanova backs would get loose but every time they were overtaken. The two touchdowns came a few minutes apart in the third period. Capt. Walt Nowak's 30-yard re turn of the second half, kickoff to midfield and Frank Bukowski's 42 yard sweep on an end-around play set up the score play on the South Carolina 11. On fourth down Buzz Howlett passed to Bukowski in the end zone. Tony Periera, Wildcat placement kicker, entered the game but his attempt was wide. South Carolina's opportunity came a few minutes later after Harvey Buek, Cat back, had punted poorly out of bounds on the Villanova 26. Ed Clary passed 21 yards to Al Grygo on the five and three plays later Clary plunged right tackle for the touchdown. Clary's placement for the point was wide. Villanova Pos. S. "This is the story," said Rex, as he slipped his sweater shirt over his broad shoulders, "we won three, tied one, and lost three-and the three times we were beaten we went to the locker room just before game time. And, believe it or not, we stayed away from the locker room just before game time when we raked in our three victories-and one tie!" Rex coralled his mussy hair with a baseball cap, then continued: "Up in Cincinnati it was hot and it was a pretty far walk to the locker rooms, so I kept my starting lineup near the sidelines after we ended our pre-game limbering drill. Then we came back to Columbia to play Georgia. It was a big game and wve figured we had to be careful with our boys, so back to the dressing rooms we went. A few minutes later A certain lady, not a hundred miles away, said boastfully, "I for one, have never in my life been to a beauty parlor." Said her young niece, "You don't have to tell us, Auntie." I Now as I look back, I recall that we went to the locker room, before the game. Against Davidson we stayed ] out in the sun-and we won. "When we met Clemson, we again retired to the locker room before game time, but in Orangeburg we stayed away and held Clipper's great I team to a tie. Now I'm wise to the setup." "Even if it rains Saturday," En right said, with a broad smile that chased the gloom back to his ears, "we're not going anywvhere near the 1 locker room." So out to the practice field went Enright to round his charges into shape--just in case the hunch doesn't work! Columbia Office Supply Co. Nowak's Nose Broken The Gamecocks, beset with ap proximately the same number of in juries they have confronted all sea son practiced blocking and tackling, the fundamentals, all week in prepa ration for one of the nation's better 2 elevens. Stan Nowak broke his nose and Rock Stroud hurt his injured - ankle in the Villanova clash last'f week and neither will be able to play. It is probable that Alex Urban and Lucius Henson will not see ac tion Saturday, although both will be in uniform in case Coach Enright needs them. Ddkes Beat Detroit Duquesne coached by John "Clip per" Smith, has been going strong since their first game defeat at the hands of powerful Pittsburg, and only last week whipped Detroit U. by the same score as did Maurice "Clipper" Smith's Villanova outfit. Against Pittsburg, the powerful Duke line held Goldberg, Cassianna and company throughout fuiI quarters and the vaunted Pittsburg finally had to resort to passes to win. The invaders, Saturday, also feature the Notre Dame System and have a quartette of backfield men who can show it off to a great ad vantage. Bill Gallagher and Mitch ell Barron are veteran backs with Gene Onder the sensation of the four. The Duke quarterback, Andy Rabatin, strange as it seems is the only sophomore in the quartette. Ends Battle To match Carolina's co-captain Larry Craig, Duquesne offers their Co-captain and right end, Ray Serangelil. The other half of their co-captaincy is center Ted Grabin ski, touted to be the best center in the Pittsburg district. In their line also are two brilliant tackles, Carl Nery and Bill Critchfield. Coach Enright did not announce a starting line-up for South Caro lina but it probably will be the one which started the Villanova clash, with Chief Myers in Nowak's end spot and Clary at the left-half post.
