Carolina Students Pay
$15,000 In Activities Fees
Carolina students paid in exactly $14,531.75, to the treas
urer in student activities fees this year, according to a report
issued by Frank Welbourne this week. Of this amount, men
students paid $10,267.50, and co-eds $4,264.25.
The Athletic Association claimed over half the fees, receiv
ing $7,697.90; the Garnet and Black and The Gamecock came
next with $1,178.25 each.

Girls in I'll-shed-on-you Sweaters
Form a fuzzy. feminine photo of delight.
And freshmen stand there gazing
At this whole array, amazing
Half in awe and wide-mouthed wonder,
Half in fright.
Epilogue:
Little Freshman if you're yearning
There's no better place of learning
Than the Wall,
And mark this down you, all
The co-eds will shake your blues off,
But do not dare to take your shoes off.
Well-well-well! What high exciting prospects we havc
spread out before us. This should be one of the most pleasani
terms in U. S. C.'s long history.
With the girls looking lovelier than ever. With Jordan in to
form. With Billy Bryan singing "I'm in Love Oliver Again'
and most. of us joining in the chorus. With new spirit and fir<
in the football machine. With a new pep song. The band car
play "A Tisket, A Tasket," and what more could anybody asli
of a college education.
So just to remind you that every silver lined cloud has also 0
dark side, Searson has returned, Alhh!
Last year I used this space to court the Fry girl and withoul
success. This year things'll be different. I'm going to use it t<
sell Charles Manning, Sidney Duncan, and Matthew Poliakof
to the student body. There's a sucker born every minute.
Next week this column will give to the students a one ac
drama of caipus life entitled "The White Star Line." Don'
guess what it deals with and you'll be surprised.
In passing let me bow in reverence to Mr. Sonny Bell for hi:
delectable discourse on the romance of clothes "From Fig LeaveE
to Herring Bones." This is a five Bell speech.
So whatever happens, always remember I love you all.

Who in America", will be that of
Dr. James E. Copenhaver, profes
sor of chemistry at the University
of South Carolina.
Dr. Copenhaver received his
A. B. at Emory and Henry, his
M. A. at Vanderbilt, and his Ph. D.
at Johns Hopkins. He holds mem
bership in the American Chemical
Society, the German Chemical So
ciety, and is a fellow in the Ameri
can Institute for the Advancement
of Science. He is also a fellow
in the American Institute of Chem
ical Engineers. He served for
three terms as secretary-treasurer
of the South Carolina Academy of
Science.

pastime, Mrs. Hawkins added.

During her two weeks vacation,
Mrs. Hawkins attended three large re
ceptions and became acquainted with
the president and military dictator of
Cuba.
After landing in Havana, the party
of winners from eighteen states was
taken inland and visited several points
of interest.
One of the highlights of her stay
was seeing her first game of Jaidai,
the Cuban national ball game.
The contest won by Mrs. Hawkins
was sponsored by the Cuban Tourist
commission. Each contestant had to
write a letter on "What I Should
Like to See and Do In Cuba."

The first specialist in orthopedic',
surgeon in the State, Doctor Boyd has,
done outstanding work for crippled
children and the poor. In 1924 he of
fered his services free in their behalf
if the legislature would make an ap
propriation for hospitalization, which.
was promptly done. He is a member
of Blue Iey fraternity.
