Heartbreaker T Gergia URBAN TAKES uEORGA PASS FOR TOUCHDOWN A kick from the accurate toe of Georgia's Bill Badgeti gave a highly rated Bulldog eleven a dear ly earned 7-6 victory over Coach Rex Enright's fighting Gamecocks in Saturday's Homecoming battle played before 15,000 enthusiastic fans packed in the Municipal Sta dium. A well-coached passing attack from Billy Mims to Marvin Gilles pie and Alex McCaskill was respon sible for the Bulldog touchdown. Mims, whose accurate heaves were reminiscent o(. Sammy Baugh, shot three needle-threading passes to his waiting ends in the short time it took the Georgia outfit to march from their own 38 yard line to Carolina's four yard line. Big Jim my Fordham, speedy Bulldog full back who carried the ball on 29 of Georgia's line plays, smashed over for the score in exactly two plays. Badgett's kick, of small moment to the disappointed Game cock fans at that time, was soon to prove the margin of victory for the Bulldogs. A pass from Earl Hise, intended for Gillespie late .in the third quar ter landed in the arms of alert Alex Urban who raced 65 yards untouched for the Carolina score. Dearth missed the all-important kick and the scoring was over for the day. Gamecocks Hold The game from that point was re plete with thrills. Down on Caro lina's two yard line, and with power house Alex Urban watching anxi ously from the sidelines, Johnny Burns, reserve center, drove Jimmy Fordham back for a two yard loss as the big Georgia line-smasher at tempted to add another score to the Bulldog side of the roster. In the closing moments of the grame, a fighting Gamecock eleven, looking more impressive as the shadows lengthened, drove to the Georgia 6 yard line when Stan Nowak, sophomore end, took a high pass from Ed Clary for a 20 yard gain. Carolina's ball on Georgia's 6 yard line, first and ten to go, but the Birds, with victory in their grasp, were unequal to the task and the line wavered to let three Bulldog defense men drive Al Grygo back for a 14 yard loss. Dearth attempted a 32 yard kick while a tense and breathless stadi um watched. It was short by sev eral feet and the Gamecock threat was over. A. Urban, Lumpkin Star Outstanding for the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday was their All-Southeastern center, Quinton Lumpkin, who starred in every play both on offense and defense.\ Mar. yin Gillespie, Bulldog fiankman, was another spectacular Georgia lineman. For the Gamecocks, Alex Urban, Larry Craig, Jack Dorfiinger, and Stan Nowak performed literal mir acles. Urban on defense and of fense, Craig with his mighty charge and deadly tackling, Dorflinger a powerh'ouse in the line, and Nowak under punts, these four earned the plaudits of the huge and enthusi astic audience as they ,sparkled in the bitter sixty milnute battle. -U. 5. 0. C. Frosh Score 6-0 MEYERS SCORES ON UNE PLUNGE FROM P. C. ONE Displaying a huskey squad but little coordination, the Carolina freshmen took their opening game from P. C. by the close score of 6-0, at York last Friday. In the final three minutes of the game Mahon Meyers, outstanding back on the Carolina team, plunged over the Presbyterian goal line for the lone score of the game. Neither team up until that time had shown a sustained driving power. An exchange of punts set the stage for the touchdown after Carolina had pushed the ball deep into Presbyterian territory. After Buford Clary, Biddie back, had downed a P. C. punt on the Hose 40, the touchdown drive got under way. A pass, Crawshaw to Kidder netted 14 yards and a first down. Meyers added 7 more and Wilburn made 7 off tackle giving the Biddies a first down on the 7 yard line. Meyers picked up four and added two more to place the ball on the one yard stripe. Meyers then plunged across the goal line for the score. A bad pass from cen ter was fumbled and the extra point missed. The Biddies had the advantage in first downs, eight to three for the Presbyterian boys. But the P. C. line defense was outstanding throughout the entire game. The play of the Milam twins at guard for P. C. featured as did the work of Carter in backing up the line. For Carolina, the work of Hanna and White in the line and :f Meyers in the backfield was out tanding. Both teams showed the effects of lack of practice and were handi :apped by a soft field. A crowd of approximately 500 saw the game. DuPree Issu For Cross Cc Sterling DuPree, University of South Carolina track coach, today issued a call for all freshman and sophomore cross country track men to report on Monday afternoon at 2 o'cock, at the field house. Coach DuPree stated that all men reporting for practice will receive equipment so training can be start ed immediately. Meets have been schedued with Duke and Georgia but the dates have not definitely been arranged. The track team last year was coached by Jack Crawford, director of physical -education, and Gilbert Bristow of Columbia high school. Entering the state track meet at Clinton, the team swept to victory over Clemson, Citadel, Furman, P. C., and the rest of the state. Cross country track has been at tempted every year at the Univer sity but as yet has not been very successful. In 1937, the cross country runners' competed among themselves several times for tro phies.
