~ia~ corof W ing Tilly With only five minutes to play in the last quarter, the Carolina Gamecocks came through with a -lone toUchdowut plunged over by left halfback F,d Clary from the Xavier 15 yd. line to win their sec ond gane * 'the season, 6-0. For three qaiirt aI Clary had. been stopped practically in - his tracks by- the lighter Xavier line. The game played under a boiling sun before 5,000 spectators in Cin cinnati, found the Musketeers stop ping everything the Gamecocks had to offer. Held to five first downs against nine, piled up' by their lighter foe, the Birds held but slight edge in other depart ments of pla , statistics show. They made 194 yards from scrimmage against 185 for the Musketeers; 129 yards from rush ing to 110;. 45 yards from forward passes, compared to 41;' and failed completely to gain on lateral passes while Xavier accounted for .27 yards. The home team was far superior- to the Gamecocks in the passing department of the game, completing six in 16 attempts to Carolina's two out of 13. A mass meeting and demonstra tion greeted the victorious Game cocks when they returned Sunday afternoon. The University Band, the entire freshman class, and part of the upperclassmen assembled at the Maxcy monument in the cen ter of the campus at 3:30 o'clock and, marched to the Union station to meet the Carolina special at 4:40. It was in the last quarter that the break leading to the lone Carolina touchdown came. Clary kicked from his own thirty yard line down near Xavier's goal line. Art Sheetz, Musketeer back, kick9d out of danger, but Clary, 9snq11c fnr . fair catch, was tackled. The resulting fifteen yard penalty put the 'ball on Xavier's fifteen yard line. Clary broke through the Xavier line for the first time that- afternoon and scored. This win by the Gamecocks boosted the sale of tickets.for the' Georgia gaine which will be played in Columbia tomorrow at Univer sity Stadium. Georgia's weak showing against the light Citadel team gave hope of victory to the Gamecock followers. Lineups and Summary: Pos.---Carolina Xavier LE--F.
