CINCINNATI -Uncle Fruit (Continued from Page One formed a very devoted family, group. Mrs. Tinman died in 1927. Mr. Tinman not only worked in Winnsboro and Trenton granite quar ries, but did. stone masonry on the Customs house pier in Charleston, the railroad bridge over the Peedee River near Mars. Bluff, the old Post Office (now City Hall) and the State House in Columbia. He settled finally in Co lumbia in 1919, and soon after changed from stone work to gardening. He had worked for private gardens and laid. out the 'grounds at Spring Lake when Mr. Coker met him and got him to come to the University in the spring of 1925. The difficulties of his position he soon overcame by prov ing his efficiency. It was difficult to believe he had spent the major' part of his life in an entirely different line of work, so thoroughly did he become identified with. growing things. His sturdy independence made him a fearless critic, and a college president who walked across newly seeded ground was as soundly berated as a freshman offender. Art classes in search of picturesque models called up on him year after year and excellent studies of his deeply lined face and keen eyes appeared in many exhibits. He did not lend himself to mere carica ture, however. He not only was a "character" on the Carolina campus; he was a man of character.
