CLOSE GAME TO PALADINS University of South Carolina basket cers began winding up their season this week with a loss to Furman University Monday night in Greenville. The final score was Furman 41, Carolina 38. Tom Ilutto, Carolina's all-state guard, paced the scorers by dropping in 23 points during the game, but the Game cocks were not able to make Ilutto's performance count for a win. Furman led by a safe margin during the lirst half of the game, leading by 10 points at the intermission. During the second period, the Gamecocks came back with a strong rally that for a time had the Furman quint back on its heels, but the purple team rallied and won the game by resorting to freezing the ball. Wolfe, Kanuck, Eleazer, Alexander, Ilenson, Petty, and I-lutto, were in the lineup for the Birds. Guy Lipsconb and Bill Simpson, cap tain and alternate captain, respectively, of the Carolina team, have not seen ser vice in the last several games. Simpson went out early in the season with an in jured knee, and three weeks ago Lips comb was fGrccd to discontinue his play ing on account of illness. The Carolina team, which won the state championship last year, has won only three games during the whole of the current season. --U. 6. 0. BOXERS LOSE TO SOLDIERS Citadlel won the title of co-holder of the state boxing championship wvith Clem son college by trouncing the Univ'ersity of South Carolina pugilists 5 to 3 last Fridlay night in Charleston. The teams remained even until the two final bouts in which Citadel men Jack Lyons and 1 lugh Rogers came out on top. Carolina's co-captains Rex WVilliams and Frank Jenkins in winning their bat tles came through this season wvith a per feet record, and Jenkins, 129 pounds of flying fists, closed his campaign in a glaze of glory by knocking out his Cadet opponent Bagnal. Mr. Crawford announced that he had k posted notices advising tenements to or- ci ganize teams and send lists of team mem- 01 hers to him. Fraternities will also enter teams in the tournament. at Players to be eligible for competition must not have played on either varsity C or freshman teams at Carolina or any fc other institution. Host to the cagers gathered from throughout the state for the tourney, the University has furnished sleeping quar ters, meals at decreased rates, and enter tainment for the visitors. Dances are being given each night in the Student Union building lobby by the various fraternities and sororities of the campus. Tomorrow night's play will feature the three championship clashes and a varsity game between the Gamecocks and Geor gia Tech's high flying Golden Tornado. The high school games begin at 5:45 p. m. with the Class C fnals, while the varsity contest will follow at 9 p. m. All high school participants will be admitted free to the Georgia Tech-Caro lina clash, as they were at the Davidson contest in the field house last night. Final Plans For Block "C" Club Final action on the adoption of a new constitution wtis taken Monday at a meeting of the newly revived Block C club of t14e University of South Caro lina. A striking feature of the new consti tution provides for discipline of Bloc< C wearers by the club for infraction of training rules in any sport. Plans for a social function, to be hel sometime within the next month, were discus ei at the meeting, but no delinite action was taken concerning the matter, Bill Simpson, alternate captain of the basketball team, and football letterman was recently elected president of th< group.
