PETOSKEY
AIMS FOR
STATE TITLE
The 1937 Gamecock basketball team
will take the floor against the maroon
clad College of Charleston quintet to
morrow night in the opening game of
the most ambitious schedule ever to
face a Carolina five. Twenty-four
games including battles with Duke,
Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Wake
Forest, Georgia, Roanoke, Marshall,
and Clemson will see the Gamecocks
playing on an average of once every
second day throughout the month of
February.
Coach Ted Petoskey has not been
able to name a starting lineup as yet.
The Michigan All-American football
end, who shoots for his second suc
cessive state basketball title this year,
said that no player would be able to
go the full forty minutes of a basket
ball game under the fast-break system
used by the Gamecocks. "The new
rule, abolishing the center jump ex
cept at the opening of the game and
the half, will speed up the game trc
iendously," said Petoskev. "Add to
this the speed of a fast-break system B
and you realize the necessity for a large C
squad." added the Gamecock mentor.
A large part of the success of the a
1936 edition of Basketeers was the -
work of a pair of fast-moving, sharp
shooting guards, in the persons of Tom
Hutto and Captain Bernard James.
Graduation took James from the squad
and a new and competent ball-handler
will be needed to match the versatile
all-state Ton IHutto, in the back court.
As the guards do the majority of the
difficult work under the fast-break sys
tem, Petoskey trains all of his men
to play this position and' all others
on the floor. By concentrating largely
on defensive tactics Petoskey hopes to
hold his opponents to low scores, while
his ball players find the hoop with
multiple plays and long-range shoot
ing.
The Birds have been scrimmaging

for Charleston's invasion on Saturday

formers who have been on the sick
and injuredI list. Alternate Captain
13ill Simpson, heavy-set forward on
last .year's quintet has been nursing
an injured knee since the Carolina
to play on Saturday.
Twenty-one players have reported
for practice thus far this season. Cap
tam Guy Lipscomb, Tom Iutto, Gene
Alexander, Archie Petty, and Oliver
\\'olfe have been performing as one
team due to the presence of the three
veterans, Volfe, Lipscomb, and Hutto,
and this qtintet will probably open the
first game with substitution being fre

Bill Simpson, Bill Overton, George Ka

I.ittie, Johnny TurnbulI, lit IDurham,
I,ucius IIenson, George Coleman, and
Charles (hens, are also working out
on the Carolina squad.

RUMOR
Old man Rumor--and the Atlan-.
ta Journal-both have it that the
Patrick brothers are Carolina
bound. The Patrick brothers are
--John, head football coach at
Oglethorpe University for the past
few years, and Frank, star Pitts
burg fullback this season.
The Journal said that a confer
ence was held a few days ago in
Columbia between the Patricks and
the South Carolina authorities.
They may be signed as assistants
to Head Coach Don McCallister.
The brothers came to Columbia
because they had heard that there
were openings in the Carolina
coaching staff. John Patrick re
cently signed a new one-year con
tract at Oglethorpe at a salary in
crease. "There is nn obstacle in
the way of Frank's acceptance of
the job," the Journal said, "and
it is very likely that he may serve
as backfield coach at South Caro
lina."
The brothers conferred with the
special committee on the athletic
situation but no details were re
vealed.

Carolina's reorganized Block "C"
Club will hold an important meeting
next Monday night, at 8:30 o'clock,
in Davis college, stated Jim Good, tem

Reorganization of the club came af

that most of the causes of the criticism
of the University teams could' be wiped
out if an effort was made by the boys
themselves.
Twenty-five lettermen interested in
this idea met last week and started
the ball rollilg. Jim Good, baseball
star, was made temporary chairman of
the organization. Temporary secre

committee for revision and amendment
of the Constitution and By-Laws are
Ralph Dearth, Rhea Haskell, Frank

Several projects will be attempted
for the athletes, says Jim Good. Train
