IRON MEN C ALL FOR ST By Ed McGarth Carolina's "consolation prize package, the victorious freshmen football tear swept to a muddy 26-0 triumph over th Furman Purple Zephrys on last Frida night to clinch their claims to the stat freshman football title. Th4 Biddie "Iron Men," with the services of onl twenty-one ball players marched throug an impressive five game schedule to fin ish undefcated, untied, and unscored upor The butt of much good-natured bante because of the size of their squad, th Carolina freshmen early showed thei power as they ran roughshod over powerful Presbyterian first year team i: a one-sided 31-0 scoring rout. The "Bab Birds" from the opening whistle, showe their potential strength as they punche over 17 first downs while their staiwar line allowed only six Bluestocking firs downs, four by passes and two by penal ties. The P. C. warriors were unable t score a single first down by rushing. A Grygo, dubbed "twinkletoes" by admir ing fans, made his Carolina debut wit two touchdowns and constant scorin threats. In the next encounter the Biddie traveled to Augusta to humble a highl touted University of Georgia machine b the overwhelming score of 25-0. I Crackerland the Gamecocks met thei first acid test and the Georgians trie hard with 13 first downs to the Biddie; ten. As in the P. C. struggle, it wa again the stalwart play of the Carolin line which provided the margin of vic tory. Unable to crack the Biddies' de fense, the Bullpups also found Grygo any Arrowsmith too hard to stop. The fleet footed Grygo added three more touch downs to his record. The Gamecocks were slated for defea when the Clemson Tiger Cubs came t< Columbia four days later with th "greatest team in the history of Clem son freshmen." Unwilling to taste de feat, the "Iron Men" earned their nev title by holding a helpless Tiger score less while Ienson bucked and ploughe< his way to two touchdowns for the Bid dies. In this game the Carolina line firs showed its real power by holding th vaunted Clemson attack to three firs downs, one by rushing, one on a penalt and one on a forward pass. Through out the first half, with the exception o one 15-yard punt relurn by Clemson' Aubrey Rion, the Tigers had a net los from scrimmage. Only once in the en tire game were the Cubs able to pene trate to Carolina territory. Grygo, scoring d three times, ran his total points to 60. d Leo Kroto, right guard, finished the Fur t man game with 300 playing minutes of t time, not having been substituted for - throughout all five games. D The Biddies passed and ran their way .1 behind beautiful blocking to 70 first - downs against 30 for their opponents. The "Iron Man" line which paved the s way for much of the Gamecock's success y was composed of Ed Brown at left end, y Alex Urban, left tackle; Ollie Jones, left i guard; Bill Mitchell, center; Leo Kroto, r right guard; Joe I latkovitch, right tackle, 3 and Stanley Nowak, right end. Little ' Joe Patrone, 170-pound guard and utility s man, played a fine brand of defensive 3 ball and was responsible for three blocked - kicks, one against Georgia and two - against The Citadel. I In the backfield, in addition to the ball - carrying of Henson, Grygo and Arrow - smith, the quarterbacking and blocking of Hill McCallister, the speedy running t of Bill Lowry and the dependable per > formances of Joe Grugan also stood out. e Tim Bozard, Corneil Griffith, T. Mac - Donald, E. Carms, Ed Myers, R. Clay - ton saw a few minutes of action in the P. C. and Georgia games. Armstrong Takes Table Tennis Title Earl Armstrong for the second time in as many years was crowned champion of U. S. C. 2ing-pong players in a tourna 1 ment conuucted recently in the V. M. C. A. when he outpinged Sam Daniel in I the finals. In the semi-finals Daniel lefeated Dan Blitch, and Armstrong took the measure of Oliver Wolfe in four straight games.
