Daniel, AAQQie Cenq,9 Baseball Team Trusts Luck , By St. Claire Muckenfusa Editor's notes In a recent issue of - the Gamecock, an exposition of the su perstitions of the, tennis team appeared. Below appears an article concerning the superstitious beliefs of the Carolina base ball team, written by an assistant man ager of the team. The baseball team is perhaps the most superstitious group of athletes on the Carolina campus. Their beliefs in luck are many and varied, and the coach as well as the players are be lievers in charms and lucky practices. Van Edwards thinks that it is lucky for him to sit on the end of the bench for a few minutes before each game. Lynn Kalmlaach believes in rubbing the cnd of his bat for luck. Several- players carry lucky coins and charms. Capers McCravey has a special way of laying his glove down that he considers lucky. If the team wins a game, on the day of the next game Coach Stamman will eat the same meal he ate the day the tcau Wol. He especially believes in eating strawberries for luck. Four leaf clovers are also a sign of good luck for the coach. He found two the day before Carolina beat Clem son. It is bad luck to crow bats or sit on a knot hole on the bench. -U. a. . Daniel and Wil iams last week ran away with all the ionors in the state collegiate tourna nent, Daniel taking the singles crown mnd pairing with Williams to win the loubles title. Daniel had little trouble in winning iis way through the state tournament, is two hardest matches being with Beatty of P. C. in the semi-finals and with Prince of Wofford in the finals. Daniel, seeded first in the tournament, won over Prince, seeded sixth, by cores of 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. Daniel and Williams had fairly easy roing in the tournament except against ,aGrone and Campbell of Clemson in he semi-finals. The score was 6-1, 6-4. n the final event, the Carolina pair net another Clemson team; Mitchell nd Arnold, who had defeated Brad am and Carson of Carolina in a semi nal match. Carolina won easily in the loubles final, the score being 6-1, 6-1, -1. Other Carolina players did not fare o well. Bradham and Carson, the ther Carolina doubles team, lost to ufitchell and Arnold of Clemson after Ipsetting the No. 2 seeded pair of iken and Southern of Furman in the irst round of play, 6-3, 6-3, and taking ipearman and Schueffer of Newberry n the second round, 6-2, 6-1. In the singles matches, Williams of arolina defeated LaGrone of Clemson in the third round, only to lose to 'rince of Wofford in the quarter finals, -6, 7-5, 6-1. Carson of Carolina went o the third round of the tournament. -Ie defeated seeded Mallory Smith of urman in the second round, 12-10, -7, .but lost to Beatty of P. C. in the hird round, 6-2, 6-1. Bradham of Carolina won his first ound match over Spearman of New >erry, but lost in the second round to :alhoun of Erskine, while Prince of arolina lost in the second round to outhern of Furman, 6-1, 6-2. Other nembers of the team, Guy Lipscomb nd Louis Bryan, were unable to go to he tournament.
