State expenditures in South Carolina

'State expenditures were approximately
3,000,000 in 1917," says Professor Der
rick. "In 1937 expenditures by the state
wili aggregate between $19,000,000 and
:20,000,000."
Four reasons for the increase are given
-y the economist:
Establishment of new departments, in
titutions, commissions and bureaus.
Expansion of work already undertaken.
Increases in salaries paid state officials
is a result of added work and steadily
ising price levels.
State-support of county and district ac
ivities.
