Carollna Enter Meet Held College Park Five Fighters From Carolina Enter Southern Conference Tournament Five Gamecocks boxers left \Vednes day for College Park, Md., where they will participate in - the annual Southern Conference boxing tournament Friday and Saturday. The men who made the trip are Frank Jenkins, Gilbert Colina, captain Hlarry Hilton, Louis Carleo, and Rex Vil liams. They will compete with teams from Duke, N. C., State, University of North Carolina, Maryland, Richmond, Wake Forest, Clemson, and the Citadel. With the team went coach Frank De Mars and Mrs. DeMars, and Manager Preston Johnson. The team will go to Washington, and from there will go to College Park. Under the critical supervision of Coach DeMars, the team has undergone a sea son of intense training, working out daily in the gym, punching bags, skipping rope, shadow boxing, sparring, and taking light exercises and road work. As a result, the boxers are itn better shape than at any time during the season. Rex Williams, 169 pounds and the heaviest man on the team, has worked himself into tip top Condition, developing a strong attack with powerful punch in both arms. The lightest man, Frank Jen kins, 119 pounds, is faster than ever be fore. Both Williams and Jenkins are favored to win their matches. Harry Hilton, who will be fighting in the 159 pound bracket, is a strong fighter and hard to hit. Hilton has a good chance of winning. The cut over Gilbert Colina's eye has healed, and he will not be handicapped by a reopening of the old wound. Louis Carleo has a distinct ativantage in his long reach. The game had no significance in the Southern Conference race, for although Furman is a member of the conference, their schedule is not extensive enough to make them eligible. The game 'was not a hard one for the Birds, and they gained an imlxsing lead in the first half over the Purple team. At the halfway mark, Carolina led 22 to 11, just double the Furman score. In the second half, the Gamecocks came back even stronger, and swamped Furman with a smooth offense that netted goal after goal. Raymond Culclasure of Furman car ried off the scoring honors from Bernard James of Carolina. Culelasure made 13 points and James counted 12. Oliver Wolfe of Carolina made 9 points for his team. The win by Carolina marked the second victory over Furman this season. The first game, played in Columbia, was also won by Carolina, with plenty of goals to spare. Clemson Cagers Beat Carolina Clemson's Tigers got their revenge on the Gamecocks at Clemson on Tuesday night by defeating the Carolina team by two points, the score being 31 to 29. The Clemson team led from the start, and kcpt a slight margin for most of the game. At the half, the Gamecocks led by one point. With only six minutes left to play, the Tigers led by seven points, but the Birds closed the gap with long shots. Bernard James of Carolina led the scoring of the game with 11 points. Bob Cheves of Clemson was second with 9 points. A free shot by Wister Jackson in the last thirty seconds of the play made the difference in victory and de feat for the Tigers. Lipscomb, Taylor and Hutto led the Gamecock defenses. Foul goals decided the ottcome of the contest, as the number of field goals was even for both teams. BU. H. C. Second Meet Having beaten the Georgia boxers to break a losing streak of three years du ration, the Gamecock boxers went on to dlefeat the P. C. boxing team at Clinton on February 20. The score of the match was 5 to 3. The 119 pound match was forfeited to Jenkins oi Carolina. In the 129 pound class, Clements of P. C. decisioned Co lina. Carleo of S. The game was important in the C Southern Conference cage race, and made I it practically certain that the Gamecocks would go to the Conference tournament. n Davidson jumped into a 3-0 lead in the ( early moments of the contest. The lead changed back and forth during the first t half, with the score at the close of the first period being 15 to 13 for the Game- r cocks. In the second half, the Birds came t back to pile up an imposing lead before n the visitors had a chance to get their ( bearings. The score at 29 to 19, David- < son began a rally, and pulled up, but the i Gamecocks started to work again. When the last whistle sounded, Coach Petos ky's charges had the top end of the count by eleven points. The admission charge s will be forty cents for adults and ten I cents for children. t As their main attraction the Alumni All-Stars will offer the appearance of the renowned Earl Clary, one of the greatest backfield aces ever to wear a Gamecock uniform, who is expected to do his part in the graduate lineup.
