Bird Ba Grid Game Called Off Inter-School Spring Football Game Is Called Off- Alumni May Play The spring practice football game between Carolina and Erskine Col lege, scheduled for February 27th, was called off by the Seceders, accord ing to William Harth, athletic direc tor. Disappointed over the failure of this contest, Coach Don McCallister planned' to have his Varsity encounter a team composed of Alumni on a suit able date next week. The alumni contingent will include such former star Gamecock performers as: Johnson, Gaffney, Robelot, Craig, Tatum, Wilburn Clary, Watson, Far num, Hopkins, Hall, Mitchell, Hart ness. Many of these mentioned are seniors still in school, but have played their last game under the Carolina colors. Having been favored with excep tionally fine weather, the large squad has been making a great deal of head way during the past two weeks. Despite this fact McCallister plans to lengthen the practice period until March 1st. Twenty-one new tackling dummies have been ordered to certify that all players will become hard tacklers. In addition to this a large du-r ny of new construction has been bought at a very high price. Melton field looked like a second hand tire lot with the varsity ball carries running through the tires to loosen up their hips and aid in making them nimble footed. The outstanding fact of the spring season is the splendid performances turned in by the former members of last year's freshman team, which lost only one game. Brilliant is the play of Harold Hartel, center, and Irving Granoff, guard, who are giving Frank Kiss and Pop Howell, varsity main stays, a struggle for their regular positions. In the backfield Herb Stroud, Red Snider, and Tommy Lonchar are making the upperclass men hustle to retain their posts.
